Whilst celebrating record store day at my local independent hi-end stereo store, the owner asked me if I wanted this tonearm he had laying around for.....get this.....$200?....$100?...$50?...$25?....nope!!! FREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! And even better is what it is! It is some kind of Luxman arm that has a broken armrest with...some variant of the GRACE F9 CARTRIDGE!!! With a stylus that looks OK! Can you identify the arm for me? Thank you!!!

Wow!! FREEE...

By the way, your "200? 100? 50?" made me remember the tv ad with Steve Ballmer selling Windows 2.0. Hilarious.

Yeah, I like that ad, much as I dislike Microsoft. Ballmer is a WACKY guy!!!

Ben agree looks like a Luxman arm, maybe from a 272, I think they were made by Micro Seiki. Not bad for free! I can't see the stylus in the photo, the plastic color of the stylus will determine which Grace model. Some of the most common are the F9e (green) and F9L (clear) but any one of the Graces will be terrific sounding.

The stylus is off for safekeeping in the picture. It is yellowish, so probable green, the F9-e. Deli, the arm rest cracked off and I don't have the piece. Maybe I'll send it to you someday, if you want to work on it! :D

It probably is from a 272., I think there was one in the shop on the floor for the last few weeks.

Congrats!! It's beautiful. What a nice surprise for taking advantage of national record store day!

You can tell I'm happy by the fact I changed my avatar for the first time :) The stylus on the Grace distorts on the inner grooves. I can probably sell it to someone that wants to retip it. I will be working on the tonearm, though :):)

Hello Ben,
The arm is a Luxman TA-1, made by Micro Seiki :tresbon:

Wish I had some stores like that around me!

The Grace alone makes it worth at least half of the total price! :D

Seriously, CONGRATULATIONS! :thmbsp:

You must have been a good customer, or made an impression on the shopkeeper as someone who appreciates gear. Nice little touch of Karma in there somewhere, no doubt!

Yes, the owner is extremely nice and puts up with my OCD. I tried the RPM 1.3 yesterday. Nice table. I hated that th felt mat stuck to the record after I washed it carbon-fiber style :)

Ben, it's actually a Luxman arm from a PD-277, which is similar to the Micro Seiki TA-1 without removable arm wand. You can tell the difference from the PD-272 arm because the cue lifter is a separate device, not mounted to the same post as the anti-skate pivot. It was separate so the auto function of the PD-277 mechanism could operate it from beneath the deck top.

I can tell you it's approximately 9.5 grams effective mass (not counting cart and fasteners) and is very happy with medium to medium-high compliance cartridges. I absolutely love mine, it makes every cart I've tried sound excellent and I've tried bunches!

Hello Jim,
I stand corrected on the arm identification! I missed the missing collet for the detachable arm tube.

Angus
