Advent 1 refoam and restoration

Here is my progress on a pair of Advent Ones I picked up a few weeks ago. I've titled this thread refoam and restoration, but they don't need any restoration to speak of. I just plan on refoaming and recapping them.

Woofers pulled from the cabinets. The foams disintegrated when touched.

The baskets were two different colors, so I rubbed them down, primed them with etching primers, and used some black textured Rustoleum paint.

Surrounds courtesy of Rick Cobb. I have the correct mesh dust caps to go on. If you look at the originals, surely I couldn't do any worse fitting them than the manufacturer? Look at them, they're clearly off-center.

Incredible job Lee! I personally love when the foam is disintegrating, makes for an easy removal!

Good job! Be sure to let us know which woofer sounds the best when done, the Cheerios woofer or the Frosted Flakes woofer.

:D

This is by far my favourite loudspeaker.I have owned a set since I was !7 .......now 52. re-foamed once. driven often never hard .presently driven with the low-end of a 220 wpc amp . no bells or whistles just essential signal path. Their Great ! Cheerio on a great project.

Here are before and after pictures of the crossovers. I went with a 10uF and 3uF in parallel, the Erse came out of my Genesis 2s, and the Dayton came from Parts Express.

Here they are, all finished. I used the correct mesh dust caps, slightly larger to hide the mess that was the original caps fitted so far off center.

Nice job :thmbsp:

You could pour some hot glue over the new caps. Be generous with it, its good to have them stable from vibrations.

My Advent /1's stacked on a pair of NLA's. Both pairs were CL "rescues". Maybe I'll tire of the stacked sound eventually but for now, I'm enjoying them quite a bit.

Here they are when I got them.

Lee.

Lee,
A friend of mine is going to re-foam his pair of Advent 1's.
Does the foam surround on these woofers attach to the BACK side of the outer edge of the cone?

I am not Lee.

Yes, on the all-metal Advent woofer, the inner surround flange goes behind the outer cone edge.

On the original masonite Advent woofer, the inner surround flange goes in front of the cone edge.

Of course, on the all-metal woofer, the outer surround flange can go only one way, in front of the little ledge on the driver frame.

Thanks for your reply's.

We are going to refoam them next week.

Just seems like a real pain in the rear to scrape off the old foam/glue on the back side of that cone....

I have a set at work...they are a nice speaker...I do not think they get the respect the other Advents get, which is too bad..

Hi Lee, Nice to see some quality workmanship and shim those voice coils. How do they sound?

They look as good as new! :)

Wow! So many replies to address...

Someone else correctly stated the foams attach to the rear of the cone already. It's not too bad getting the old foam off, just use a small flat screwdriver. The cones are very thick on these woofers, more like cardboard than paper, so it's easy to use a screwdriver.

If you're in America, I would recommend getting some decent blades from someone like McMaster-Carr. I use part numbers 38995A73 and 38995A76, the latter of the two is like a very sharp chisel, and it great for getting the glue off the frames. I don't worry about scratches, since with these pressed steel frames, I ended up painting them anyway.

These speakers sound pretty good to me, they are basically a New Large Advent in a slightly smaller box. The "fried egg" tweeter can be a little bright I think, but I don't have anything (yet) to compare them to. I am however working on a pair of Advent 5002s, which are like New Large Advents, but with a dome tweeter. Once they're done, I'll try and do an A-B comparison.

These old Advent cabinets are made of some nice, thick particleboard. If you find a set missing the drivers, you can either rebuild them using the original drivers, or use your own drivers and crossover like I did.

Here is a link to a useful thread on Identifying your Advent Speakers.

See if your dome tweeters from the 5002 will work in the Advent 1....I have always wanted to try that but have not gotten around to picking up a set of Advent soft dome tweeters..

My own restore

This is my 2nd speaker restore and first refoam job. Things I learned on this one... Get a good soldering iron and don't use so much glue on surrounds. Soldered the caps on the speaker terminal side but had to improvise with the resistor connection. Has anyone ever tried this kind of connection you see in the photo? I got em playing and they sound fantastic as of now but am I gonna run into problems cause I didn't solder that end? I hot glued it to combat vibration and pulling apart.

Thanks to the people that posted on this thread. Came in handy for couple things.

Digging up an old thread of mine, instead of starting a new one for the same pair of speakers. I've been working on another pair of Advent Ones, or Advent /1 as it says on the box.

The woofers are getting the same treatment - rubbing down the baskets, priming and painting before refoaming.
