Pioneer Series Tower 2.24

opa1

Tenacious
I'm starting a new speaker build. They are designed for a small room with sep or set amps. Tuning of enclosure is 50Hz. Alignment is buy GM from Diyaudio.

My avatar has the large mltl's I built from his dims and sims. They work quite well. So building another design from him is a no brainer.

The drivers for this build are www.wildburroaudio.com 8" Betsy k's fullrange.

Since this is the second of a series. We decided to call them Pioneer Series.
Tower 2.24 is the size of enclosure, model name.

Here is a drawing of the enclosures.

Nice! You can't go wrong getting advice and designs from GM.

The Betsy K sure looks like one of the best deals out there for 8" fullrange drivers.

Good luck on the build and post plenty of pics!

The betsy k's do work well. I have two sets of betsy k's and one set of betsy's in ob's.

Cutting material today. Pics later.

Got a little done today. Found out ryobi router bits su=k. It cut the holes, but was wearing out at the end. Better brand next time.:yes:

Here's a pic of the baff's and sides.

The port looks big to me too. Here's the alignment mltl specs.

Using MJK’s L*0.349 driver offset = 36”:

L = 54.15”
CSA = 64.78”^2 + driver, bracing
zdriver = 18.9”
zport = 43.32”
rport = 3”
Lport = 0.75”

All dims i.d. [inside] and approximate and of course damp to 'taste'.

GM

This figures into a 2.03ft^3. We enlarged it 10% for the driver and bracing. So it is now 2.24ft^3. The rest of the dims stay the same.

It took a 6"x.0750 port to tune in sim at 50Hz.

Betsy k cutout is 8 5/16x 1/4 deep for flush mount. Then 7 3/8 for the hole.

Got some done. After cutting the big stuff, my back hurt to no end. Had to take a break.
Started cutting for the biscuits. Yeah pros and cons on that. Makes it easier for me to line up.
Heres a pic.

imho Freud bits are pretty good compared to some other brands I've tried. when buying a router I always recommend getting one with a 1/2" chuck. they have fewer heat issues and the bits last way longer before they need to be re-sharpened.

I've got a 1/2" spiral plunge bit that can literally cut 15 to 20 good size holes (over 5" in radius) in material 2" thick before it needs re-sharpening. just go slow and remember that when working with hardwood plywood your speed should be below 15,000 rpm. when working with mdf use rpm's over 25,000. follow these speed guidelines and you won't burn the edge's of your work and you'll get more life from your bits.

the spiral bits are very good for eating through thick wood really quick but they are more expensive to sharpen, usually they need to be sent away so it takes longer. but they last a lot longer then straight edge plunge bits.

your project looks great, what is the cost on a pair of these drivers? I looked on the website but couldn't find one.

My router is 1/2". I'll check out the freud bits.

The Betsy k's were 110.00 pair and the Betsy's are 100.00 pair. Plus ship.
Here's some pics of the Betsy k. The betsy looks about the same with a smaller magnet.
The OB"s in the back of pic are betsy's.
I've only used the betsyk's in mltl's so far. Sealed and ported enclosures should work well though. I might try a BR next time.

You might not feel the need to after this enclosure. :)

Cheap router bit warning - I had flush trim bit bearings explode a few times, which can ruin your wood, they are the cheapest possible. I'm done with these cheap things and will move up to Freud too.

Making slow progress. Biscuit slots cut. I'm having to do a bunch of domestic duties.
Hope to have some more done this week.

Cabs are done. I made the bottom bolt on. I wanted to clear them but WAF says black to match furniture. Going to get Duratex. Its a black textured coating for speakers.

I'm tempted to put the drivers in and try them out.:yes:

Todays pics.

Great job!

It's usually easier to get away with natural wood finishes than black monolithic boxes, strange that it'd be the other way around for you. :) They will look more bad-ass that way too.

Thanks!
I couldnt stand too wait to finish. I put in a pair of broke-in betsy k's. I'm using them with my TV system. They sound very promising. The TV amp clips at volume. Its made for small tweets. Havent tried them on my tube amp yet.

I have a few more things to add to them. I want to put handles on the sides. Moving them takes a bear hug. I might build up the bottom plate to.
I'm waiting on PE to send my binding posts. Waiting on duratex too.
