Speaker Binding Post Mod for 317/417/517/717

Hi,

Having been asked by the owner to convert the speaker terminals to binding posts on a 717 I am restoring for him, I thought that there must be a way of doing this without needing to drill holes etc in the rear panel, and that would be completely reversible in so desired, and would also be applicable for the 317, 417, and 517.

Here is the end result..... well not really the end result, I have just prototyped this and this is the result.

Initial design was completed, and it was time to get into some metalworking. 1.6mm (16G) aluminium was chosen for the main plates, and 0.8mm steel for the rear locking plates. Two plates approx 76mm long an 26mm wide were cut out, as where two small locking plates

Bindingpostmodstartingout.jpg

Two copies of the drawings for the main plates were printed out, then cut our and taped to the plates. Hole centres were then punched, and a hand hole punch used to make the mounting holes and binding post holes in the two plates

The plates ready for painting

and painted

The plate mounted to the rear of the 717. I am using black M3 screws, and have mounted the plates with M3 nuts for trialling the fit. M3 screws, or black 6g self tappers could be used, I am going to tray a few different combinations to see what gives the best result The plate is designed so that the fastening screws locate the plate in relation to the cutout in the 717 rear panel, and once all screws are fitted, the plate is locked in place.

What it looks like with some binding posts installed (these are not the final ones that will be fitted, I am waiting delivery of these, should be in the next day or two and I can post up final pics)

and from the rear (as per notes above, this is not the final rear arrangement)

Once this is fine tuned, I am going to get some plates and rear locking plates professionally made up from 1.0 or 1.2mm Steel sheet and powdercoated satin black. I have a few units in my collection that I will be doing this mod to, along with a couple of other 717's that I am restoring for friends, this will be a lot easier than making them up by hand.

I hope this shows another option for doing the binding post upgrade.

Cheers

Gee this will make life easier when fitting binding posts to these models! Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh soon.

Superb mod! :thmbsp: - Thank you for this posting - This I'm sure will interest Sansui owners (me included) who are looking for a way to get speaker binding posts into their AU117/217/317/417/517/717 without drilling holes into the back panel and be rid of the original spring-loaded one's.

...and for those of us who have no metal working skills, maybe you could supply your mod as a upgrade kit (for a fee of course) - Hint! Hint! - :D

Keep up the good work! :tresbon:

Mmmm... good isn't it

Nice workmanship, thoughtful plate design :thmbsp:

Good look at yer tools too :D

Sell me one!!!! Seriously, I would like to buy a plate from you if you want to make 'em and put 'em in Barter Town.

I took out the plastic block on mine and removed the springs and all. Then I drilled out the holes as carefully as I could and inserted the binding posts. Turned the whole thing with the posts pointing down and filled around them on the inside of the block with epoxy. It works, but I'm not entirely happy with it. I wish I had chosen better binding posts, but cannot change it without getting another block. The upside is that the block fits back in place just like it did before the mod.

I still want one of yours......

Thanks for the comments!!

I hope to have the binding posts that I will be using before Xmas, so I can complete the prototype install and finalise the design. I'll keep in mind the requests for these.

Cheers

John

Nice work John :thmbsp:
Wouldn't it be better if you put plates from the inside (seems to be plenty of room)?...just wondering :scratch2:

I have made it like this.

Nice work, but I don't think that's the intention of this thread. Dad and I have done the same kind of binding post installation as per your photo, and have posted this info previously in other threads. This type of installation requires holes need to be drilled in the rear panel and requires custom fabrication of the mounting plate for the binding posts. Sure, it works just fine (and has worked fine for the many, many Sansuis that we've converted) but it's a custom job every time and holes must be drilled.

The new option presented by Dad means that the mounting plates can potentially be produced in bulk quantities, meaning that future binding post upgrades can be quick, easy, 100% repeatable/accurate and 100% reversible if required.

Nice work John :thmbsp:

If the main plate was to sit inside the rear panel, you'd still need to fit the small retaining plates on the outside of the unit (note that these are not shown in Dad's photos as the screws are a bit too small). I think it looks cleaner with the larger plate on the outside. Dad will no doubt post extra info in future. :)

Hi,

An update....

I received the binding posts that I wanted to use, they are 30 amp rated and supplied by Cliff Electronics in the UK. One of the reasons I chose these were the fact that they look similar to binding posts that were used in Amps of the era. There is also a "chunkier" head version available that looks good as well

Old terminal strips removed and wires prepared for lugs

I didn't take any pics of the lugs that were fitted to the speaker wires, or the assembly process, but here is the end result. I ended up using M3X10mm threaded screws with washers and M3 nyloc nuts to hold the plates, this worked well and the rear plates that I had intended to use aren't really needed. The flash is a little unforgiving, so I took some with and without)

I will be seeing what the plates could be made for professionally as I have several other Sansui amps that I want to do the binding post conversion on and I don't what to be making these up by hand.

Cheers

Gee those new binding posts look really nice indeed. As you say, the flash reveals all, and the non-flash photos look damn good indeed. :)

Indeed.

The last two pics tell the story. They look sensational IMHO and are consistent with the appearance of the OEM binding posts used on the 719/819/919 etc.

The ability to use banana plugs and spades as well as bare wire is a huge plus!

+1 Very nicely done John - (and the binding posts you used come from the UK and are only ~£1 each !)

Thanks John, and yes, the binding posts do come from the UK and are very competitive price wise.

This is the other option re the binding post style, the owner of this 717 uses predominantly Spade terminations, and these posts provide a little more purchase for finger tightening.
