What do you say about this Technis SA-600 receiver?

Mystery

constantly upgrading...
Got this in excellent condition from original owner with original manual and spec sheet.
Owner had it stored for last 10 years but said it turned on fine and all lights work.

It's made by Panasonic but looks very much like a Pioneer of that time.
It's rated 70 wpc so pretty decent power and feels hefty.
Here is a picture with manual and specifications sheet in color. ;)

I like it! I have the SA-400 and SA-500, and my first decent system was built around the SA-300 which I bought new. The brochure is a nice touch.

Looks like new. I had an SA-300 for around 30 years and was very happy with the sound. Got rid of it early last year to make room for some other receivers I wanted to try.

Had an SA-500 that I bought new. Was a pretty nice receiver. I remember it would always run hot at idle though.

Okay, that's not good if it runs hot.
I have to cram it in a shelf in bedroom and need something that runs cool.

I used to have one. The tuner worked great and the amp was really punchy. It would move woofers more agressively than other amps at the same volume. I ended up getting receivers that sounded better, but I rather regret getting rid of it.

I have an SA- 600 that a friend and I restored and I have been nothing but pleased with it. Tons of power and very clear! You have a great unit no doubt!

Have heard nothing but terrible things, sell it.
I feel so bad you got stuck with it, I'll be a good guy and buy it from you.

I had a SA-400 for years. I agree - a nice clean sound and quite handsome to look at. Mine ran a bit on the hot side also. I eventually went with the warmer sounding Marantz 2270 and Nikko NR-1015, and sold the Technics.

I hope you like your 600. That's really cool that you got all of that neat literature with it!

I picked up a black faced SA-600A, but I haven't put it into service yet. It has a weird radio issue that I just haven't taken the time to look into. I do like the look of them, reason I picked it up.

Good luck with yours.

Bill

I just sold my Techics SA-600 and it ran very cool. If it runs hot it needs a bias adjust or else some components have drifted due to age. Mine ran just barely warm even after several hours of on time. I just have to thin out the collection as I only so much room.

On appearance, I give the Technics SA-600 high marks. IT is impressive and a true late 70s beauty! These Technics are starting to gain a bit more attention. They did cuts some corners with the fiber board bottom and the thin vinyl cabinet veneer. Wood would have taken it to another level and I thought about building my own which would not be so difficult to do. In fact, I remember seeing wooden cases offered for the SA-800 and higher models on that E*** auction place to $90 or so.

The discrete phono section in the SA-600 is very quiet and better than many especially in this price range. The FM tuner is superb and very sensitive at least on mine, and could pick up a few stations with no antenna and most with only a 30 inch single wire.

I think the overall sound of the SX-600 was a bit forward in the treble and mid range but offered great detail for jazz and classical music. But the tone controls were difficult to adjust if used and the bass especially. The SA-600 offers both HI/Lo filters and also a "boost" position. With all controls set flat I found the sound to be forward and not as smooth as my Pioneer or Sony units. Maybe I just prefer a warmer smoother sound? The bass could be on the boomy side no matter what set of speakers I used it with. But still a very impressive receiver for the day and the money. Still a very enjoyable unit to listen to and most impressive to look at while doing so. I liked the appearance a bit better than the Pioneer SX-780 I also have. I wish both had a wooden veneer cabinet rather than the cheaper thin, vinyl veneer they both have.

\I just started a thread comparing the SA-600 to the Pioneer SX-780.

Sold Technics back when these were made they were great recievers don't remember them running hot though. They had those great speakers during the time the sba 6000,5000,and the 7000 those speakers kicked and had a great phase arrayed look also sold the monster 330watt/channel reciever man that thing was heavy but it sure demo'd speakers great.

I have the SA-600 which is extremely rare in Germany because it was never sold here.

It looks exactly as the most powerful receiver ever built, the SA-1000 (330WPC), exactly the same design. Yes, it is a shrunk SA-1000! :D

Overall good sounding receivers. Tuner section better than average. Selector switches known weaknesses (especially if it lived in a dusty, dirty, or smoker household).
