So, my cousin and I sometime ago built a pair of OB speakers using Pioneer 15" CS woofers, 8" Saba Green Cone mids, and 1-1/2" x 3" paper tweeters (don't know the brand, but if someone recognize them, please advise). The speakers are located in his listening room, hooked to a 2 wpc highly modified Zenith EL34 SET amp.
His oldest daughter recently rescued a stray dog. Well, to make a long story short, the dog peed a few times on the Pioneer woofer of one speaker. On the other the dog decided it was better to chew on, than to pee on it. He just ordered a pair of Vintage 15" Magnavox woofers to replace this Pioneer's, as the price of these vintage Pio's has skyrocketed.
Well, since he didn't have speakers out of a whim we improvised using a pair of vintage 6" Full Range drivers with Alnico that he had from a lot he had purchased on Ebay few years ago. We call them the DirectTV speakers, as they were built using the box of a satellite dish system. Sound is stupidly awesome, simply unbelievable. You have to hear these speakers to believe it. To speed things up we used my Dayton DTA-1 to test them, and they sounded very good, though brighter than what we like. Then we changed to the above mentioned tube amp, and the sound was jaw opening, the highs were clear and not bright, very enjoyable. Bass was plenty and controlled, and the mids were very detailed. Ricky Lee Jones - Pop Pop like I have never heard it before, not even in the bigger OB's. While the bigger OB's are sweet sounding and warm, this were dynamic and fast, able to keep up with any music played on them. If you have never done this, go ahead and have fun with a simple project like this.
