KG4 k-74-k crossover frequency

ThanatosOfOn

Klipsch Fanboy.
I accidentally bought a set of these tweets on ebay. Anybody know what the xover frequency is for a KG 4? If anyone has the full specs on these things that would be great, since I don't have a set of KG4's. I do have some peerless 6" woofers (a pair of Aura LSM-627's that my 2 year old daughter decided to punch the ribbon tweeters in about a decade ago) and have entertained the thought of making some small bookshelves with a horn, but I am gonna need some specs to make an xover. Any help would be appreciated.

This is all that is on the Klipsch site. They would be good to 2KHz with a steep crossover say 24 but for passive xover I would suggest 2500 -3000Hz for a safe crossover at 12 db and you will be fine. Have fun and let us know what you do. Best regards Moray James.

PS: Here is the KG 4.2 schematic I can't find the KG4 anywhere.

Preciate it, but the KG 4.2 uses a different tweeter(k-85-k with a poly dome vs k-74-k with a phenolic). Sure, it is probably close but damn man, you would think I could find the k-74-k specs somewhere.

EDIT: Will definitely keep you guys abreast as to what I do with these things.

Don't worry about the diaphragm difference and the crossover. Your tweeter is likely the same motor as a regular K79. I know the Quartet has a slightly smaller motor than a standard K79 does but they do sound pretty darn close. If you have a K79 pull then out and see if they are the same swap the out and listen. A slightly smaller magnet weight will result in a little lower efficiency but not much. You are fretting unnecessarily get trying some stuff and see how it sounds. Good luck best regards Moray James.

KG4 specs

If you are still looking here are the specs for those with KG4 speakers. Found the data out on the net a couple years ago when I bought a pair. Note the 1800 Hz crossover frequency.

The crossover contains a thermoswitch type device (RDE 070) like that you see on the KG 4.2 circuit that moray james posted. I think this is for protection of the k-74-k tweeter, so I would follow moray's advice and not cross it over too low.

Here's the KG4 specs:
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 38Hz-20kHz±3dB
SENSITIVITY: 94dB @ 1watt/1meter
POWER HANDLING: 100 watts maximum continuous (500 watts peak)
NOMINAL IMPEDANCE: 6 ohms

DRIVE COMPONENTS: Two-way system using one 1" (2.54cm) phenolic dome compression driver tweeter with a 90°x40° Exponential horn, two 8" (20.32cm) front-firing, poly ICG cone woofers and one 12" (30.48cm) rear-firing, fiber-composite cone passive radiator
TWEETER: K-74-K 1" (2.54cm) Phenolic dome compression driver
HIGH FREQUENCY: 90°x40° Exponential Horn
HIGH FREQUENCY CROSSOVER: 1800Hz
WOOFER: Two K-8-K 8" (20.32cm) Poly ICG cone active / KD-12 12" (30.48cm) Fiber-composite cone passive
DIMENSIONS: 24.25" (61.6cm) x 15.75" (40cm) x 10.75" (27.3cm)

FINISHES: Walnut Oil, Oak Oil, Finished Black
YEARS BUILT: 1985 - 1992

Cheers: :)

I just got a pair of KG4's. The schematic is very similar. Delete the 2 resistors. Replace the 2.5uf with a 3.0, and replace the 3uf with an 8uf. Replace the 1.0mH coil for the tweeter with a 0.5mH one. Coil and cap for the woofer are the same. I found a schematic, but it is 1MB. I can email it to you, if you like.
