They were my 1st HiFi speakers ... Bought them about 6 weeks after getting my 1st real job :D

For obvious reasons I've been looking for a pair for a few years... My problem , they dont come up often but when they do the price is sky high for a nice pair

I think they're great. I had those and L112s for quite a while and always thought the L96 to be a better speaker. I haven't priced them recently but for a time they flew under the radar and could be had for little.

I think it's likely JBL sold more of the L112's than they did the L96, but that's just my guess. They did fly under the radar but that whole series (L96, L112, L150A) gets people's attention these days.

Doesn't help that you're in SoCal, anything that makes it to the internet for sale with the brand "JBL" on it & that's also a decent model tends to be priced top of market unless they're hammered beyond recognition.

Pair of so-so ones just went for $265, seller in Colorado Springs. Would have cost you $355 shipped but that's not a bad price for these. They did go thru a spike awhile back and were hitting in the $500's and even $600's but it seems to have quieted down a little.

They continue to be my desert island speaker. It's usually either those or the L5s for me. Both can make anything sound good. Not that it helps, but I paid $200 for mine with factory re-coned woofers maybe three years ago. I thought I stole them at the time but they'd been for sale for $275 for quite some time and no one had pulled the trigger. I have the entire group; L96, L112, and L150A. Going price for a perfect pair seems to hover around $500. But then I paid $900 for my L112s when they were new!

I also recently just completed my set of L1, L3, L5, and L7s!

It seems to me the prices and availability is better on the West Coast, but maybe that's because I'm on the East Coast?

I was flipping some Heresies and a guy called me to offer a pair of L96s in trade; they just needed refoaming. I was all over it (probably too eager) and scared him off; he stopped returning my calls. :sigh:

The funny thang is... Threads like this drive the price up

the avg Joe has a pair for sale , he googles and sees this :D

I see references on CL all the time about what 'Audiophiles' say about this or that... Those 'Audiophiles' are us

Actually L96s suck. Seriously suck.

So Frank, have you done any refoams on any JBL woofers? Have you had much experience in cleaning up JBL cabinets? And what prices have you seen for L96's in the SoCal area?

No on refoaming

Yes , I've done cabs

Part of my problem is I wanted plug/play L96s - already refoamed & shiny - I wouldnt mind doing a recapping myself

Seen them $400-600

I wouldn't sweat the refoam. Orange County Speakers is just a short run up the freeway for us, and their refoam jobs are as good as it gets. For cost of $40-$45 per woofer, saves a lot of aggravation.

Just want to make sure the cones are intact, and moving when signal is applied. You can't really hit them with much output - risk of damaging the voice coil assemblies - but if you lay the speaker on its back, you can run enough in there to watch if the cone responds normally or not.

These do turn up in SoCal, but you have to be quick and looking in the same places the flippers do as they get snatched up fast if the asking price is anywhere in the score range.
