$3.00 'As-Is' Behringer A500 = Simple Fix

Thrift Store looking while I was out for lunch... Behringer A500 had a $5 sticker with "Powers up" :scratch2:

Ok... I could tell it took a big fall at least once because the power button , left output dial were marred , scuffed up and a heat fin on the left was slightly dented

I plugged it into an AC outlet with fear :D -- came on for 1/2 sec then went into protection. Ok , I offered 3 bucks and he took it after he got approval

Got it home... Long story short : the power button was busted-up badly on the inside. I cut it out and hot wired it :thmbsp:

Works great

I may leave the AC hot wired fix and remove the two output dials from the circuitry. I've read they are cheap and faulty.

Thanks... after a good 30 minutes of on time I checked the DC offset

Ch1/Left = 22.5mV

Ch2/Right = 15.9mV

Not bad

Took the the cheap & usually poor performing output Pots out of the circuitry and made the 'hot wire' permanent today...

See link in Post #4

What was causing the "protection" fault?

Not the broken power switch, maybe the cheap pots?

Just curious.

Mark , the busted power switch was making a completed connection (power on) no matter what... but I believe was grounding out

BTW - Hold on to your hat :D

After removing the pots and making those 20K plugs running output at 100% the DC offset are incredibly low

Ch1/Left = 2.4mV

Ch2/Right = 1.9mV

:scratch2:

I'm rechecking in about 5 minutes to double check

Project Finished

I did not disconnect the light show on the front panel -- Seems to have no affect on SQ and I sorta like it

I spray painted the power button & output dials Black and super-glued them back on the face , of course they are now dummies. I did not want to fabricate a front panel like some people have...

Going to put her in the main system and hear her through balanced XLR inputs. From what I understand the Behringer A500 is a true dual mono design. I can attest to her exceptional SQ after removing the output pots
