Is MOG, as we know it, going away?

I got an email from Mog the other day saying that I needed to be on the lookout for an email to claim my username on Beatsmusic.com (Beats acquired Mog over a year ago) . I got the email today and grabbed my Mog username, but I am concerned what this will mean for Moggers. According to the NYTimes, Beatmusic will launch in January.

Right now, there is very little information on how this service will compare to MOG, but I have a feeling the current MOG subscribers will be moved to Beatsmusic in the coming month or two.

Thankfully, there is Spotify and GoogleMusic Play to move to if the new service fails to meet expectations. Supposedly, Beats has combined with AT&T on this venture, so I am curious if that will affect pricing.

Yeah, I'm pretty concerned, too. Primarily about whether the fantastic selection will be dumbed down to just the more popular stuff, and about pricing, which is currently an extremely good deal.

I am more concerned about the layout and the slider for the "radio" station that allows you to pick a lot of one artist or little .

I can't see them pricing it higher, since this is where the entire industry has landed. They would definitely be throwing out listeners with a more expensive approach.

I know that MOG could have been marketed better. They let Spotify come in and invade social media without making a chirp. We know the Beats marketing staff is a lot better than Mog's marketing staff, so that could help them if they don't screw up the user interface too much.

Changes at MOG

I haven't gotten anything from MOG yet. Like Chick, I'm concerned that they will orient towards the mass market and leave us behind...

Above average "bitrate" aside.....consider Rdio as a most viable alternative if not the better option than spotify & Goog. Rdio's selection is on par with all else. Yet their user interface (desktop & mobile app) blows them all out of the water.

Thanks to you, I found this stupid-good website.

Thank you. :thmbsp:

I wouldn't fret too much about them "dumbing down" their selection. Selection is King, contracts are signed, and "shelf space" is an insignificant factor. Competition and margins are so thin within this business; shaving your library would be akin to blowing holes in the bottom of your boat.

I'm inclined to agree. I don't see the service as it currently exists bringing any dead weight to investors.

I had read a snippet about Beatsmusic and I had wondered how they were going to get up and running so quickly. Now I understand.

I agree. As I said, I am more worried about the layout which I am very happy with. I chose MOG ( I was using Rhapsody) solely based on their sound quality, so I will only go to a competitor along the same lines. I have the free version of Spotify and they send me an invitation to try their paid service ( for free) pretty much every month, so I may take them up on it in the future, just to try it out.

The main upside is that Beats isn't starting this service fom scratch. They already have a high quality product to market, so if they don't screw things up, it could be a benefit. I am happy with MOG right now, so I am not looking forward to any major changes.

More than anything Beats is just a brand. They're going to use their name to cash in on the whole Spotify cash cow.

Cash cow is a bit generous. It's a tough business. Last year Spotify lost 78 million up from 60 the year before. With product acquisition costs at 83% of gross revenue, it's gonna take alot more than deep pockets and branding to survive in the long haul.

All the other services (including MOG) are in a similar boat financially. Beats does bring the possibility of product tie ins to the party.-- so there's that.

Remember Napster Canada? They had a great service, but they were bought by Pandora, I think. Due to high royalty fees in Canada, they simply shut it down.
Enjoy MOG while you can, but if you want a permanent collection stick to physical media.

When Beats bought MOG I think they were after the consumer data that MOG and it's related 'open source' GraceNote CDDB gathered from consumers. Their model now is to develop a curated music selection and market it.

I'd be interested in seeing Mog's P&L's. A quick Google search turned up nothing, but I see they've been operating at a loss since inception. No big surprise there, but I'd like to see some numbers.

Mog sent me a email to save my user name for beats too. I hope it gets better and not go down the toilet. :deal: :boink:

Got the email. I doubt they would change the MOG service at all for current users. The new Beats Music thing sounds like another service based on putting today playlists with curators or artists... interesting and could be popular, it's a new twist.

If they do change MOG, it wouldn't make any sense at all to decrease the size of the library, the biggest selling point they have is the number of songs in the library. Doesn't matter too much, most streaming services end up using musicnet for encoding playback anyway, there are other options. musicnet is the company I'd like to see the P&L on, they are the "middle man" serving up the tunes.

Ahh. Wasn't aware of that. Interesting. :scratch2:
