A Tale of Two Speakers KEF Carlton lll.

At the end of December, on my way to work, I found a pair of KEF Carlton lll at GW for $22 including tax. They were filthy, but they cleaned up nicely. The cabinets are in very good shape. Got them home and hooked them up to a Nikko 7075 receiver and a JVC cd player, popped in a cd and settle down to listen. Tweeters fine, but distortion in one B200G woofer. Voice coil rubbing! When pushing the cone in and out I found a spot where it didn't rub. Carefully detached the surround, and using a "Looneytunes" 20hz cd, re-glued the surround. Let it set overnight and hooked it up again. Success! Moved them into the bedroom system, replaced a pair of Polk Monitor 5 speakers. Put "The Digital Fox" into a Denon DCD-820 hooked to to a Denon PMA-757 and WOW! Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor filled the room. These certainly put out some bass. Might replace the Polk Monitor 7A's in the main system.:D:D:D
Any suggestions on how to clean the grill cloth?

Back in the day, JBL recommended Texize K2r for cleaning its grill cloths.

With plastic grill frames (but it looks like yours is MDF) I've been known to dunk them in a sink with a mild detergent solution then rinse them in clear water and pat / air dry them. :D

And ... $22 ... now that's just crazy talk. Congratulations!!

Yes KEF has a special sound! Moved into the main system replacing the Polk Monitor 7A's. These put out deeper bass than the polks. The Polks now in bedroom system. Zonkers92 thanks for the mention of K2R. Use to work for a furniture manufacturer and had a can of K2R, but couldn't find it, but did find a can of Mohawk Zipclean ll. This worked reasonably well, apart from filling the house with toxic inflammable fumes. Now sitting enjoying the KEF's filling the room with a Telarc cd, Micheal Murray "Organ Blaster."
