Yet another unusual GTE/Sylvania speaker (3-way this time)...

Found a pair of much-neglected GTE/Sylvania speakers, yesterday.

Noticed they had both dome MIDS and dome TWEETERS... decided to take the plunge. You should have seen the red duct tape "surround repair"...

Got the woofer re-surrounded, and did some cabinet first-aid with some sandpaper and some Howards Restore-A-finish, to make 'em at least look like they didn't come straight out of the landfill... fired 'em up...

These things are quite good! Reminds me of a "poor man's AR5"... same driver arrangement, basically, with a 10" woofer, 1.5" dome mid and dome tweeter. Not quite the bass control or output capacity (the little alnico magnet woofers and mids start to compress over about 40 watts per channel) of the AR5, but VERY GOOD balance. And some SERIOUS bass extension and whomp!

Drivers in the system appear to be Rola-manufactured, ie, Jensen clones for the most part, at least as far as the woofer is concerned. Other than the wonky deep-recessed front baffle, very good design.

Wonder who designed these (were they from inside GTE/Sylvania or a paid consultant?)...

I have a nice set of these with the 12" woofer. nice speaker with a great sound. Does that one have the high/low switchs for the mid/hf like mine does? I like the dome mids / hf on these.

I have a pair of 8" two-ways with identical styling that I've posted about before. Nicer sounding speakers than I ever expected. Cool stuff, Gordon. - Mark
