Lafayette Receiver

Picked one up the other day A LR 5555A that seems ok as a garage unit. looked on line for information on these, competed with Radio Shack ect.... There were some saying that they may have some models that were made by someone other than Lafayette. Wondering what units they might be. My receiver was made in Japan?

It's pretty clear that the OEM for the higher-end LR-9090(A) was the same as the big Setton receiver of the same era (they're virtually identical)... I don't know who that OEM was, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 5555(A) is a Setton "cognate" as well.

Lafayette didn't actually "make" anything - they were a retailer like Radio Shack.

Many of their receivers were made by either Coral or Foster. Your 5555a is likely one of those; it was one of their last models before they bit the dust - it's in their 1979 catalog. Quite expensive for the day at $379.99, and powerful (55 or 65 wpc, depending on which spec you read).

Happy trails,
Larry B.

Pretty sure the 9090 and Setton RS-660 are basically the same units.
Likewise, the 5555 and Setton RS-440 are almost the same.

I like Lafayette's last line of receivers.
I bought a 2020 and a 9090 new back in the mid/late 70's.
A couple years ago I got a LR-120DB off ebay.

Dunno if this adds any value at all, but since all this stuff was more or less at my fingertips...
