Rotel Scroe!!!

StarShine 10/23/2014
A few years back, the husband of a friend of mine happened upon a resident of the apartment complex where he worked. The resident was hauling many bags of albums to the dumpster. Management wanted to paint the apartment and told him to do something about his collection. So it went to the dumpster.

The husband hauled out an estimated 2000 classical albums in pristine condition and let me pick out about 100 for free.

They also pulled out a stereo. They could not get it to work and gave it to me. It was a

I did just a bit of cleaning and hooked it up in my friend's presence. It worked fine. I offered it back and she said "no, it's yours". "Are you sure?" "Yes".:banana:

It sat for years as I had no preamp. I casually watched Craigslist and looked everywhere I went and kept my eyes open for the opportunity to pick up a matching preamp.

On Friday, June 13, my wife went to a local sale while I was at work. She is not into audio and had no knowledge of this particular desire of mine. She walks past all the tables and piles in the parking lot, looks down on the ground, at the bottom of a stack and spy's something she thinks I might want. She does not know value and does not know equipment so she offer's a price. They accept.

It was a

for a grand total of 20 quarters.:banana::banana::banana:

It now resides in the main equipment position and I am giving it a first listen. I am only using the RA-810. The Pioner Pl-510A with a Denon Dl-110 is playing

through the EPI 100M speakers and it sounds fantastic.

I am happy. :music:

The two units stacked...

Don't worry about ventilation. The RB-1070 on the bottom is not hooked up. At 130watts/channel, I don't currently have speakers that I would hook up to it. I do have some Boston A-150's waiting to be re-foamed. Once done, I will construct some shims to put between the units. The room is not big enough for real power anyway.

The recently acquired RA-810 is rated at 40watts/channel and is an integrated amp.

Plenty of versatility on the front panel. Connections for two phone inputs, two tape decks, two aux. inputs, low and high filter, separate left and right bass and treble, and reversible stereo.

The connections on the back panel include the preamp jumpers for later use with the RB-1070. It also has adjustments for phone input which I have not had before. Another thing to play with.

It sounds wonderful. I have rotated a number of receivers in the past year and just could not find that sound. Of everything that I have tried with the current setup, only the Scott LK-48 was scratching the itch. I have to say that the RA-810 rivals the pleasing sound of the Scott. It is clean and clear. The treble controls on everything, up till now, have been boosted quite a bit to, I thought, compensate for these old, worn ears of mine. It never was a pleasing sound. The tone controls are now flat and it just adds the air to the violin that has been missing. I also have not cleaned the RA-810. It was found as you see it.

Your friend saved two thousand pristine records from being destroyed! That's mind boggling.

The real beauty of this story is he got back into vinyl, bought a turntable, started spinning classical, and became seriously hooked. Sadly, I have not heard from them in a couple of years but I know that he was immensely enjoying a new found hobby. :thmbsp:

Not at all familiar with the Rotel 810 integrated, looks very nice and very clean as well.

Enjoy! :music:

Nice gear, nice find, with a nice story behind it. Congratulations on your good karma!

Now don't worry about too much power with the new amp - just use the volume control intelligently. It may (or may not) sound better even without making full use of its power.

I would run the big amp without a second thought. It's not about volume...it's about clean headroom and control over the drivers. Make sure the amp is still in good working shape (check for DC offset etc.) and run the 801's preamp outs to the big amp. I have a hunch you'll enjoy it immensely.

I am going to have to give it a try. Right now though, I just want to listen.

Still sounding good now spinning a recently acquired, scratchy, well-worn copy of Merle Haggard's "The Fightin' Side Of Me".

The Pioneer PL-510A is using a Denon DL-110 from Comet Supply. I really like this combo. Even though this is the only (I think) fully manual table that I have, the interaction is a pleasure.

I have been listening to the RA-810 now on an, almost, daily level. I have really been enjoying the music.

Finally hooked up the RB-1070 to the RA-810 today.

At normal listening levels the volume control is in the 9 o'clock position. At this position, the volume is slightly higher with the outboard amp than without it. When reaching the 12 o'clock position, the 810 would begin to sound a little strained which, of course, is no problem for the 1070.

The tone of the two is very, very similar. The 1070 definitely brings out the flaws in the music path more. Surface noise, dust, etc. I have yet to invest in a good record cleaning system but it is moving closer to the top of the list. I also am putting the woofers for the BA-150's at the very top of the list.

Time for a speaker upgrade.
