Something to keep me amused while on the hunt AU6600

Well it was CHEAP…
It looked so SAD
( It was a dirty girl )
Power switch is broke, missing knobs & switch caps
But after 20 minutes.. she sings again.
Sprayed EVERYTHING
took air gun to her
Then gave her a good listen… not bad
Spent about an HOUR cleaning, re gooped the small voltage reg transistors
which were LOOSE along with the finals & pre drivers.. and clean clean clean.

My 9090 ( a closet queen ) offered up her Vol & Bal knob..
tomorrow I'll set bias and give her a good run..

Not sure If I'll keep her but it's a nice little OL SKOOL amp~

More fun with bodging switches

And a little proof of concept..
Now the AU-6600 has the type of switch that the 20K, BA, CA use
It is a DPST which makes it a potential place to score parts..

But we don't want to leave a 6600 out in the cold..

So remember this post:

Well I put it into the 6600, since AGAIN my switch had a broken tit.. so these are the steps ( in pix form ) on how to do it… it's deeper but in a 6600 you have TONS O room…

Now going to wire it in…
Oh did bias and DC offset this AM both channels were running in the 40ma range ( need to be 25 +/- 10ma ) offset was good 0.0X

So now ( DRUM ROLL ) …...

Left to right
1) The new holes for mounting
2) Original switch L New switch R ( upside down ) Whoops !
3) The original broken switch.
4) New switch mounted.
5) Another angle.
Who knows.. This MIGHT save someones amp.. and it gives me a victim to try tit replacement REV-2

Been puttering with the AU-6600

Power switch in, works nice.
Speaker selector was WAY cruddy ( sprayed & cleaned )
Good thing I did DC offsets off the board directly!

So this unit lacks OOMPH…
Why do you ask.. the power supply is sagging BAD…
At about 5 watts.. SMOOTH and has oomph
10 watts similar but thinning out a bit
@ 20 the rails are drooping about 3~5 volts
Any more I start to flat top
So for the people that say re capping is a waste… I say PPFFTTHHH

Going to clip lead in some AUX caps to prove the point ( for myself )
These are 6800uf @ 50 I think I have some 10K's @ 100 just for a test

2 10K's @ 40 volts ( ohhhhh that's close ) .... but enough to prove the point
20 watts.. 1 volt sag.....
There's the BEEF...

Nuff said

It's interesting how a constant input signal (as opposed to music content) will show up all sorts of things that have gone south over thirty years.
Ears may lead us astray but scopes and distortion analyzers don't :)

Yeah and the odd thing was I was about to let it go.. just thinking it was just a wee baby amp that wanted to be a BA-5K when it grew up.. but a few clip leads later.. VERY little sag, tighter bottom ( probably MUCH better damping at that point ) I just ordered the replacements I'll be interested to measure the old ones on my sencore and see EXACTLY how far away they strayed.. This poor child had a VERY abused life and was 100% factory , well except that spiderweb & lunch leftovers.

I hope you get her back to max condition, I have the AU-5000 and she is quite the thumper plus I love the looks of these units. A sleeper little amp for sure and the triple tone control is kinda cool too.

A little look at caps under the hood

So I got my new PS caps in the originals are 6800uf@50 I got 8200's @ 50
and they are so CUTE and TINY.. So I thought I would do the Hide the new cap in the old can since I didn't have the right size PVC to make a spacer ring…

1) So here are the innards of the Neg PS cap, Dry, measures out @ 4900uf
2) The POS vs the NEG. Pos swelled up, got hot , the WAX level was MUCH higher ( due to swelling ) Measures 2100 uf and MUCH dryer.
3) Innards
4) Neg re assembled Good as new EH?

Vigman, that's brilliant work. Enjoyable read, and glad to see you save a worthy amplifier.

My Sony 7065A at low volumes is lovely. As the volume climbs, tho, it "flattops" as you say. 41 years old, only a bit younger than myself, and doing far better, haha.

Thanks….. I " think " I will use it as a loaner for when I have to do service for my " Bud's "…

Another foot note the electrolyte really contaminates the round disc with the internal lead attachments and was NOT taking a tin… 3 swipes with a rather coarse file BOOM nice bead to attach the leads of the new caps…

Well one more to go…..

Your Sony would probably GREATLY benefit from a procedure like this..
I'm slightly OLDER than this amp, and would like a new power supply… as well as other bits LOL~

Vigman, I'm gonna beg my tech buddy to at least recap the power supply. That sony is so sweet.

Getting a 1250 and my Sansui AU-G99x fully rebuilt by Mattsd, but I have a soft spot for that 7065.

Get that Sansui of yours full spec, and you may find a permanent home for it!

Hard to find shelf space when an AU 20K is in one room and the CA-3000 ( driving the power amp section of an AU -9900 ) in the other. While I wait for the BA-3K coming from Japan~ Got a little Jimi playing on the 6600 as we warm it up….. but the BEEF is back…. with some SMOOTH with a side of OOTH

And DONE~

Bias & dc moved a TEENSY bit no more SAG!!!
Now trying to get the right switch caps

Hmmmmm what's next?

I'd buy that from ya in a heartbeat, but I got too much dang stuff anyway.

How would you describe the sound?

Hard to… I haven't done any " critical listening " My Test speakers " are tannoy PBM-8's and not a " matched pair ".. later today I'll drag it into my son's old room and hook em up to a pair of L-100's… That's kind of my Burn in room.. if it makes out of there ALIVE It's ready for prime time...
