Technics sl-1700 problems with pitch control

ok, i got this tt maybe a year ago or somethin for like 8 bux plus shipping. the pitch adjustment by using the strobe on the platter for reference has always been tough to get right, but once it locked in there, it stayed forever, until i accidently hit the knob and had to readjust.
now this tt is giving me problems, i turn it on, its never at the right speed (usually slow). when i adjust it so the dot is in the center on the pitch control knob it jumps from slow-fast-slow-fast and will not calm down. its turning my beatles from drunk to chipmunks and back again. im ready to throw this thing out my window. anyone kno whats up with this this? do i just need to lube the motor or somethin? should i buy a new turntable? any ideas are welcome.

edit: in case anyone doesnt kno, this is a direct drive table with servo (not quartz) lock.

Technics turntables like to get touchy speed selector switches and fine-adjustment controls -- and this causes speed instability.

You will need to take this apart far enough so that the bodies of the switch and control are accessible. Squirt Caig DeoxIT D5 on and around any slots in the switch and into the gap in the control. Work the switch from 45 to 33 about a hundred times and turn the control through its entire range about fifty times.

That should repair it.

Best,

Fred Longworth

The Deoxit treatment works. It has restored many scratchy pot's and well as restored my Technics SL-23 and more recently my Technics SL-1300.
In Canada try Take Five Audio.

I fixed the exact same problem on my Technics SL-BD22 using DeOxIt to clean the pitch control pot.

ok just did it with some napa cd electectronic cleaner stuff. just got the thing hooked up and put on the Doors "Waiting for The Sun". the pitch response is so amazing, the thing snaps up to speed as soon as u turn it on. im amazed, i dont think this has ever sounded so good. thanks a million dudes Rock On!

Jesus, I've been dealing with this problem on a Technics SL-D35 for years and just always fought it until it was somewhat stable. Can't wait to try my DeOxit on it. Thanks, all.

Oxidation of switch and potentiometer contacts can cause strange and aggravating behavior on vintage electronics. This is the very first thing that should be suspected before getting frustrated and tossing things out. Unless they are difficult to access, anyone can clean and lubricate contacts. I am very glad to hear it corrected your problem!
