Best TT from Yamaha?

Register to hide this ad
well... there was a YP-D9 and YP-D10 in Japan as well.
You mean you prefer the DD of the D8 to the belt-drive of the 1000?

And the GT-2000/2000L, judging by the astounding number units available must've been quite a player. "GT" btw does not stand for Gran Turismo but for "Gigantic and Tremendous"!

You are speaking from a 'world' perspective and I am speaking from a 'North American' perspective. We didn't get many of the best products available from Japan in 'the day', so to speak. Guess the NA marketing boys felt we weren't worthy of same.

BD vs. DD is a non-debate for me. Both done well are just fine. I'll leave to others to debate this.

Besides......if you don't have it on TVK, how are we supposed to know about it?

Wasn't the GT-2000 the first hot sports car from Toyota or Nissan? Did they put a tonearm on them? :D

Linear trackers are OK, but, IMHO, mostly curiosities at the lower price point. The ones from Yamaha are really 'tanks' compared to the linear arm models from Rabco, Sony, various others at the time. The ones offered by Rocksport and Kuzma today are a totally different league. Perhaps I am just an old 'stick-in-the-mud' on this.

And, I should have said the '8xx' series from Yamaha in my first post rather than just the '8'. Not sure what they did to drop the price by $110 over these three years. Perhaps Axel knows.

Some MRSP cost info on Yamaha TTs:
YP-D800 1976 $500
YP-D801 1978 $550
YP-D8 1979 $440
PF-1000 1986 $650
PX-2 1980 $950
PS-3 1982 $670

Axel - got any pic's of the Japanese models that you can post here? Would be nice to see what they look like.

Datsun 2000GS roadster, 145 mph with the top down. Used to get races from Sunbeam Tigers and XKEs. Woo hoo!

...my catalogs aren't scanned yet, but you can see the full version at K. Nisi's:
GT-2000/2000L: http://www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/gt-2000.htm
GT-2000X: http://isweb14.infoseek.co.jp/art/k-nisi/gt-2000x.htm

There are oodles of 2000/2000L in Japan, almost one a week coming in at hifi-do (sometimes more! along the smaller GT-1000 and GT-750) ; the updated 2000x is x-rare.

BD vs. DD is a non-debate for me as well but I was just wondering... quite a few years between your D8 and PF-1000 and a certain difference in price.

BTW, the PF-800/1000 is from 1983 (not '86) and export only - that's what we got instead of the GT-2000 :D

Wow, the geometry and layout looks really similar to the Concept 2QD

The available controls, layout and even the cover are strikingly similar.

I've read that the 2QD was manufactured by Taic, whoever that is. Did Yamaha use a lot of contract manufacturers?

While I own a PF-1000, I consider this YP-D8 to be the best TT sold in the U.S. by Yamaha.

Wish I had room for 'just one more', to quote Mr. Creosote (Monty Python).

Axel - How much are those GT-2000/2000L TTs selling for in Japan? Can one purchase and then get it to the U.S. safely? That would force me to sell my PS-8750 to absolon or byrdwyngs or .............

Actually, I prefer DD as the motor is generally more powerful and easier to use with a Discwasher brush, which I use on every play. However, the motor on the PF-1000/800 is surprisingly powerful. My Rega 25 & P3 were terrible on this count. If they even saw you looking at your Discwasher brush they would stop rotating. :D

The 2000 calls for about 850$, the 2000L for 1100$. Probably much less than that on the japanese Yahoo auction website but that is a moree difficult matter as 99,999% of the sellers don't ship overseas. Or speak english.
Hifi-do packs and ships amazingly safe - no problem.

Did you keep a snapshot of your Rega when they were frightened when you took a look at your Discwasher and they were looking at you, uttering a soft but squeaky whir that said "nooooooooooooo, pleeeeeeeease, noooooooooo"? I'd love to see the frightened eyes of a Rega.

Thanks for the info. May have to investigate a 2000L. Will HiFi-do ship to the U.S.?

Unfortunately, have no pic's of the Rega's. But, the P3 was so frightened that I would often have to get out from its hiding place behind the MC-500 I was using at the time. :D

Hifi-do ships everywhere ; the GT-2000 isn't made of plastic so shipping might be rather... rather.

pity - I would love to see a crawling-with-frightened-eyes Rega! Did it squeak much like a little porcupine? Or silently stare at its fate with dignified dignity?

Guess I'll have to start saving for shipping costs.

No....the P3 was absolutely silent. But, it was connected to a Threshold FET 10/pc, which is, IMHO, one of the finest phono-preamps ever made.

Haven't heard other Yam TT's.

When I bought my PX-3 a couple of years ago I was quite surprised how good it sounded(I've owned an Oracle Alexandria since 1985),I preferred it to my Oracle.
The PX-2 is better still(no I don't mean motionless :D )and would surprise those who say DDs can't sound good. :nono:
I use my system in a highly unusual fashion(too involved to go into here),let me say however that the tweeks to get more out of the electronics always yield gains across the board, therefore I have to conclude that the PX-2 is not yet the limiting factor in my system.
I still marvel at how it ever managed to reach me undamaged, that must rate as a minor miracle in itself.
I too once owned a Rega Planar 3 :boring: like a lot of Brit Hi-fi gear of that era it was massively overhyped :bs: and easily bettered.

The base of my D8 is amazingly dense and heavy - coupled with the heavy platter, it may be the heaviest turntable I have (seeing as I never have run across one of those granite-based Kenwoods...). Tonearm seems very nice, and has a handy height adjustment as well, and the cover is made out of the thickest plastic I've ever seen used.

Here is what may end up being a great buy on a YP-D8. If I buy one more piece of gear my good wifely relations with my nutty vintage gear hobby might just head south...or, I'd be a bidder.

I was watching that one as well, but I'm way leary of what it will look like when I open the box after it gets shipped across the country. I think I'll keep hoping something local will turn up soon. There was a YP-D10 auction a few days ago, but I didn't see what it ended up selling for. I can't seem to find the completed auction either :dunno:
