Onkyo dammit , my 4th receiver .

Onkyo in particular has the reputation of having bad HDMI Boards. Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, Yamaha and I'm sure other do not seem to share this problem although it's always useful to check customer reviews. People don't hesitate to relate their bad experiences.

If you google hdmi output failed AVR you will see this is a very common problem! I think all the consumer level HT receivers use the same HDMI circuits...

I like Marantz quality.
I gave my mom a Denon avr which has lasted many years. A repair man told me Yamaha are well built but I don't know.
I guess you are looking for long warranty too.

I'm in the same boat with my HT-RC270. It worked fine for 2 years, now the inputs switch on their own, and sometimes it just locks up solid and I have to pull the plug from the wall. Back to Onkyo it goes I guess, although having to pay for the shipping for such a widespread faulty product is annoying.

Can you pull the HDMI pcb out and just ship that back? Would save a lot of $.

My 808 was out of warranty when the HDMI board failed. I found a place on eBay that did the fix with a daughter board for $75. The fix lasted 90 days, then failed. I'm trying to decide whether to pull the board again and send it in.

I won't buy another Onkyo. My son's Onkyo also failed. I've been running my old NAD T762 that I took out of storage. I use an HDMI switch to feed the signal straight to the projector. It's slightly inconvenient, but the NAD sounds great. I'm still deciding what AVR to buy. It will probably be a Denon or Marantz.

In the meantime, the control board to our oven has failed and you can't get a replacement. It will cost $500 to get the board fixed and we are trying to decide whether to put that in the old oven or buy a new one. Looks like I won't be getting a new AVR soon.

I had the same problem with 2 of my Onkyo's. Onkyo support never even replied to my email. No surprise there. I will NEVER buy another onkyo. I have owned Denon and Marantz with no problems. Their HDMI boards work just fine. I do not believe they use the same boards.

I've heard about the HDMI boards in Onkyo's failing... of course, I heard about it AFTER I bought my Onkyo TX-SR608. Knock on wood, it's been fine for the 3 years I've owned it.

I'd probably opt for a Yamaha if it crapped out.

How do the Denon and Marantz sound compared to the Onkyo ?

HDMI board failures

Ray, I hate to be a killjoy, but you better hold your breath... My Onkyo 806 (retail $1099) failed after 3 years (out of warranty).

Of course, before that, my Denon AVR 788 (retail $559) only lasted about 8 months. I had it repaired twice under warranty and only lasted a month or two. Now I have two boat anchors (total value $1658) in the basement.

So now I use an 8 year old Pioneer VSX-816 I had before HDMI came out. It works fine. It only cost $299 new. I am unable to afford any more HDMI AVRs.

This is why I let my PC resolve audio (TrueHD etc) and use an older receiver that has analog in and pre-out...

It's not just newer stuff failing and lowering of SQ, it is the relentless changing of everything.. Plus old receivers with these features can be had for under $100..

Just find yourself a PC or blu ray player that does analog out.

Onkyo has been know to have these HDMI board failures for years. My understanding is the x2x line and higher was supposed to have resolved a lot of these issues. There are some videos out there on how to repair those boards though - apparently in many cases the caps go bad from the heat generated by the receiver. I've read where many have had success in replacing the caps and adding ventilation around the receiver. Knocking on wood my 606 is still going strong and I use it almost every day.
