Please help identify these speakers. They are not mine. When they go on the market, associated information will be posted in Dollars and Sense.
First up some Technics speakers, almost surely from the 1970s. A variation on the direct/reflecting approach, apparently. What model?
Next up a photo from a very elegant home. This speaker is described only as "tall"; I suspect it is a Paradigm. Since the associated electronics are expensive, I suspect this was too. If the heirs get their money's worth, no thanks to the bumbling estate sale company.
Last a single vintage speaker. Alas there is only one. I'm thinking Electro Voice but I may be overestimating this.
Have fun! Your help is appreciated.
The third photo ("tall.jpg") appears to be the Definitive Technology BP-3000's. They could also be the smaller version of these which would be the BP-2000's. And, yes both have built in sub-woofers. They later replacements were the BP-7000's (flagship) and the slightly smaller BP-7001's. These are great home theatre speakers, but there have been many complaints, through the years, about using them in a stereo 2 channel application. Many have complained about a muddy, hollow and echo type sounds. This is a direct result of the speakers being bi-polar.......same 2 mids and 1 tweeter on the front, also are replicated on the back side. When listening to them in a two channel application, is where most of the complaints have come through various Internet postings, since the release of the BP-3000's and BP-2000's in the late 1990's. The BP-7000's and BP-7001's were release around 2003. I have personally owned all four of these speakers at one time or another and currently own a pair of BP-7001's. During my ownership, I have always wanted to do a modification, to eliminate the so called muddy, hollow and echo sound they produced during 2 channel play back. My idea was to install small toggle switches on the top of the speakers under the wooden caps that pop off the top. Its taken me over 20 years to attempt my modification. My wife recently went on a trip and was gone for nearly 1 month and felt that was a perfect time to do it. Once completed, I sat and listened to about 10 of my favorite songs and went back and forth with the rear speakers on and then off. WOW, what a difference it made with them off. I will only turn them back on for listening to multi-channel cd's and movies now. For years, I thought the muddy sound had something more to do with my amp source. That actually had nothing to do with it. I have fallen deep in love with the speakers now and are keepers for the rest of my life (I am 65 now). Below is a posting I inserted on another Website and thought I would post it, as it spells out more in detail what I did. Anyone that owns any Definitive Technology Bi-Polar speakers should DO THIS TO THEIRS.............they sound killer now!!!! Below is a previous posting I did on another audio Website of my modifications..........
I know many of these responses are old, but I recently did some mods to my Definitive Technology BP-7001's (June, 2023), which made a remarkable difference. Many folks have said these speakers are great for Home Theatre multi-channel applications, BUT NOT for stereo listening applications. Many have complained that for stereo listening, these speakers are harsh sounding and also have a hollow/echo type sound to them. In my opinion, this is caused due to the fact that these are bi-polar speakers......it is the reflected sound from the rear speakers that causes these sound producing problems. I have found for Home Theatre multi-channel applications they sound great. I have modified my BP-7001's but installing 3 round toggle switches under the top caps on these speakers. Each switch allows me to turn off the 2 mid range speakers and the 1 tweeter speaker on the back side. When playing stereo music now, those mentioned problems listed above have completely disappeared. I now get a nice sweet spot, without the sound from the front firing speakers getting interference from the rear speakers, when I manually turn all of the 6 toggle switches off. Now when I listen to stereo sound/music all 6 switches are off........for Home Theatre listening I turn all 6 switches on. I got the best of both listening worlds now......bi-polar and non-bi-polar. These now sound amazing and incredible for stereo sound. As a side note, I did replace the harsh sounding aluminum tweeters with some Scan Seek silk dome tweeter speakers........made the sound more smooth and pleasant to the ears. If I could attach some photos of the tops of my speakers, I would, but don't see a way to do that. After my modifications, I have no need to purchase any other speakers. I'm loving these speakers more than ever now.
