Infinity Information on the Net

Vintage Infinity speakers are a mixture of the extraordinarily good and the equally bad. So, how do you know if you just found a gem at the local thrift store? The following links offer up the information you'll need to identify an unknown Infinity model or to locate the specifications.

Infinity Systems -- The existing company website. Navigate to Product Support to find specifications for nearly every Infinity speaker ever made and maybe, if you're fortunate, some replacement parts.

If you're looking for pictures, specifications, crossover schematics, brochures, and owners manuals Infinity Classics is the place to go.

A list of Infinity links cannot be complete without the original vintage Infinity fan site, Bobby Shred's Vintage Infinity Speaker Page.

Enjoy the reading/information to be found at the above websites and welcome to the Infinity community.

I've made this thread a sticky. Thanks to the first two posts, great info!

Everyone please post Infinity links here, the more the merrier!

While we're at it, here's a weird one! There is another Infinity board, located on ezboard:

http://pub39.ezboard.com/finfinityclassicsfrm1

I've not taken a look at content, but there are a bunch of posts.

Edit: I just noticed that the moderator is from Germany, and while not the same as, appears affiliated with, the new owner of the Infinity Classics website that JP posted.

A sticky thread stays at the top of the thread listings in its forum, and never fades to the back like regular threads. That way, it's always right there for reference.

PS: Welcome aboard!

Thanks for making this thread a sticky, NT. That forum you linked to is the one with the lousy software that I complained about in the other thread.

Vitopanch, thanks for bring up Watkins, I completely forgot to add his site to the short list. There's something very nice in the ability to have vintage Infinity Watkins woofers rebuilt by the designer.

On to more links...

Stereophile reviews:

Infinity Beta

Infinity Modulus

Infinity Prelude MTS

Infinity Servo-Static 1

General Reviews:

Infinity Hybrid Class A Power Amplifier

Repair Links:

Orange County Speaker Repair -- The people here have a great deal of experience repairing Infinity drivers and complete speaker systems. They are aware of the measurements of the 12" Watkins woofers and have refoam kits available. Occasionally, OCSS comes into possession of replacement diaphragms for EMIT and, rarely, EMIMs.

EMIT and EMIM Repair Tips -- Bobby Shred's page of information as to how to repair those oh-so-fragile traces on the EMIT/EMIM diaphragms that are far too readily damaged by clipping amplifiers.

1977 Review of Infinity Quantum Line Source 1 (QLS-1)

This came up in another thread, but I thought it would be a good link here for quick reference. 1977 Stereo Magazine review on the Infinity Classics site.

Infinity Classics QLS-1 Page

The link doesn't bring up the QLS-1 page direct. You have to click on the QLS-1 button in the LH frame to bring it up.

Kencat, you need to right click and copy shortcut from the buttons on the left hand side of Infinity-Classics to get the model specific page -- direct link to QLS-1.

Though still quite young, we've already witnessed the growth of a nice knowledge base for vintage Infinity repair. As further articles/posts are written to aid others with damaged drivers, they will be linked to here.

  1. Broken Midrange Tinsels
  2. Broken Midrange Tinsels (Advanced)
  3. Corroded Potentiometers
  4. EMIT Trace Delamination
  5. EMIT High-Resistance Correction
  6. EMIM/EMIT Burnt/Open Trace

Ok here is a quick question. I just bought a pair of Infinity RS4's off Ebay, and there are in increidble shape. I will need a re-foam, not a big thing EMITS sound great as well. Now I oticed on some of the RS4's they gave a fuse, mine does not. Is it safe to assume that this is the only difference in the two models? I know that most people say that Infinity was best until 1982, I know my RS4's are 80's but probaly not circa 82, becuase of the fuse issue. Any idears? Thanks..oh P.S this is my first post..I'm a new guy!

First, welcome to AK. When you've had a chance to give your RS-4's a good listen, tell us what you think of them.

RE: the fuse issue, the RS-4a had the tweeter protection fuse, most RS-4b's did not. As far as I can tell, there was no other difference between these models other than cosmetics for the mid and tweeter potentiometers, and perhaps differences in the lower pedestal. All this really means for the consumer is you need to be just a tad more careful with the volume knob with the b's to be sure you don't overdrive your amp into clipping, which could damage the EMITs. Best insurance for this is to use a good quality, high-current amp of at least 100-150 wpc that is happy driving a 2 ohm load.

I owned a set of RS-4bs back in the late 80's. They are great speakers. I upgraded to RS-IIIb's (the next bigger brother to the 4's) in 1990, and I'm still using them today.
