Marantz 6300 differences

Bourbon

Drinkin' and dreamin'
I posted this in the Marantz forum, but only got one response. I figured I'd post it here and see if I could get answers to my issue.

I've got a couple Marantz 6300 turntables. I noticed a slight difference in the cueing buttons on the two units. On one, the "Up" and "Down" text was located on the buttons. On the other unit, these words were located on the metal panel, just below the buttons. I also noticed that the dust covers, while exact matches, used different hinges and hinge receptacles. Any ideas as to why these are different? Here's photos of the two...

Running changes often happen over the years a product is made. Maybe they became concerned that the lettering would wear off the buttons in time so they moved it out of the way. They may have lost their source for one of the hinges so they went with a different style. I've seen decks in the past with drastically different tonearms but the same model number.

Which one has the lower serial number (my guess is that it's the one with the printed buttons)?

They're both the same as far as finishes. They look different in the photos because they are in different rooms with different lighting.

I like Tubewade's answer about the lettering wearing off, but it was also more expensive to put it on the buttons, as it made the button inventory more difficult (now you need 3 kinds), one that says up, another that says down and a third that is blank. Besides, they were silk-screening the control plate anyway and might as well put the cueing control info on that instead. I would say the second one is the later one.
