This is my 3rd attempt at building one of Mr. Gillespie's little Single Ended EL84 amp. This build is using completely new parts, but deviating from Dave's original build by using Edcor Iron instead of the original Magnavox 8604 PT and the two AES output transformers all done on the Maggie chassis. Reason: I had the stuff! Simple as that. Some time back I'd purchased a Hammond 12 X 8 X 2 aluminum HD chassis, along with the Edcor transformers. Last week after completing my #2 DG-SE1 on yet another 'donor' SE-EL84 amp chassis, I decided it was time to take this to the next level and do an 'all new build'. Inspired by DerekVa, who's thread is also viewable and still in process, I've watched while he fabricated a VERY nice version of this amp! While Derek's build skills clearly exceed mine, I've been extremely impressed with the results of the first two of these I built from 'donor' units. Hopefully this one will live up to the same level of performance.

Attached are some pics of the 'get started' aspect of this. Shortly I'll be off to the Hdwr Store to buy screws, washers, and nuts. Seems there's NEVER enough of those around when you need them, in spite of coffee cans full of the stuff!! Anyway....after some deliberation I decided to go with the chassis mounts you see in the pics. This more or less 'isolates' the PS section off to one side, puts the choke far away from the OTs and OPTs, places the driver tube somewhat 'alone' and phases the PT opposite that of the OTs. What it also does is cause me to have to devise an internal 'shielded' input scheme in order to deliver the signal from the rear RCA jacks to the front where the driver tube is. Having just built a unit on a donor chassis where this was done without any real issues, I decided the only way to see if it would work was to try it. So, I'm also going to buy a long coiled spring which I will mount along the inner edge and use as a conduit to run the input leads to the 12AX7.

Have done some drilling as pics will show....but taking a break now, heading to the store and off for a few more errands....and will resume 'build' later tonight. I home to complete the mounting of all components and perhaps even get the PS section done tonight. We'll see...... Thanks for looking, and comments welcome and appreciated. WC

Just a quick update; here's the components 'sitting' on the freshly laid out chassis. I still have to figure out if I want to put a power switch in front or not, and likewise a pilot light. But, for now....this is 'progress'....

Derek, if you read this, note that I also suffered the dreaded 'drill slip' syndrome!! My 12AX is slightly to the rt side vs being 'centered' between the two EL84s. DAMN!! WC

Sucks, doesn't it! :sigh:

Even with the slight offset (which I didn't notice until you pointed it out) it looks really nice! With regard to shielding the inputs, I like to use shielded signal wire with the shield tied at the RCA jack end to ground (clip and heat-shrink the other end at the tube socket to prevent shorts) and then separately tie the RCA jack grounds to the common star ground for everything else. Shields the inputs nicely without having to worry about any sort of conduit. Search the auction site for '10 feet 24 AWG Shielded Silver Teflon Wire Coax' - I keep about 5' handy at all times as it's cheap and easy to work with.

Also, before I forget, for safety sake, please put heat shrink tubing on the transformer tab connections after you solder your wires to it, as well as consider some sort of cage around those transformers as you'll have B+ on the connectors. That's the one downside of the otherwise-excellent Edcor XSE series.

D,

Thanks for the tip on the coax....and for the comment about those tabs. I had thought of that earlier....about the B+ on them....but it kinda slipped my mind until now. But, Yea, a DAMN good idea! Too bad Edcor doesn't sell a little pre-molded rubber boot for them......like used in the auto industry and others for shielding connections. Maybe I can find something I can re-purpose.

Thanks again, Tom D.

some people are just so darn fancy. My amp came in today and it is in need of
wire brush and steel wool scrubbing to get all the mung off. Then I too can be fancy.

Looks GOOD there wharf.

I wired a set of Edcore's this morning in a line stage I'm building. I used shrink tube on the connectors. I also covered them with a couple round trany covers. Your amp is looking good so far! :thmbsp: I'm hoping to find one of those little Maggie's to play with as well.

Thanks guys!

DG, not 'obsessed'....just 'highly motivated'......lol

If you have access to a sheet metal brake, perhaps you could bend a rectangular box that spans both OPTs and then paint it?

Dandy, thanks for the vote of confidence. I figure I'll 'practicing' for a while now. Isn't that what 'Doctors' do...... 'practice' medicine?

Derek, no access to a break. Further, I think the view of the OPTs is part of the charm of the amp. So, I'll need to address the issue in some way....likely with either 'boots' or some type of shrink wrap.....with the latter being most likely. Funny, you know the 'pants' they make out of shrink wrap for cables? They ought to make something similar for 'spade' connectors as well. But, since I do plan to solder on to the tabs..... I'm confident I can find a way to insulate the connections from a 'safety' perspective. Maybe won't look the greatest....but that's why I faced them to the rear!! See.....always thinkin' ahead......lol WC

I used to have some nice spade connectors that had rubber boots on them. I used them on some electrical connections on one of my jeeps. The boots were a bit longer than the female spade so it covered the male end completely. I just can't remember where I got them. Auto parts store, Quadratec maybe? :scratch2: These type are used a lot for connecting aux lighting and such. They help to keep watter and mud out. :D If you can find them your amp would be all set for off road. :thmbsp::D

Maybe I'll go jerk the wiring harness out of my Wrangler TJ.........lol WC

Well, I prefer the Jeep......and, as we 'Jeepers' say: It's a 'Jeep' thing...... you wouldn't understand!'.......

I had five. I'm down to just my 2002 TJ and a 2012 unlimited now. :D I've seen the female spades with plastic cover as well.

Well, I always wanted a TJ....though I have an '07 'Grand' with only about 40K on it. I also had an '02 Liberty......which I 'totaled' back in January as a result of a woman running a red light in front of me. Interestingly enough, my son also had an '02 Liberty, and he 'rolled' the thing several years ago. His comment was: "Dad, that Liberty saved my life!!"..... In respect to my hitting this woman broadside at 60+ MPH (no belt on I'm ashamed to say)....I can honestly quote my son and say the same thing: That Liberty saved my life too! But, her insurance company paid for my wreck....and I used the money to buy the '01 Wrangler...which I now dearly love. I can honestly say that getting used to the noise of a soft top hasn't been the easiest thing in the world. But, I'm also a Harley rider.....as well as other bikes. So, I can get used to it. And, I still have the Grand for the long trips between Baltimore and Detroit when I go home to visit family. My mom: A compas. My brother, another Grand. My daughter: Another Compas! And, my son is negotiating on a Wrangler right now. Even my Sister is driving a Grand! We're definitely a 'Jeep' family!! And, I do believe: Some people just don't understand!!......lol

Very cool. My my daughter drives a lifted Grand and I gave her and my son in law one of my lifted Cherokee jeeps when I thinned out the herd. My '02 TJ is the one I scare the crap out of my kids with. :D the unlimited is my wifes. I spent a lot in parts and time making it really off road ready and she wont let me take it out on the more challenging trails. I might scratch it. :D

I was surprised....after owning the Liberty and Grand for several years.....when I got into the Wrangler I suddenly had to 'Wave' at every other Wrangler on the road! It really is a 'cult'.....and unfortunately the club doesn't include the 'other' Jeeps! Kind of a 'Wranglers Only' deal. I want one of those spare tire covers that says: If you can read this, turn me over!' Hey....... ya never know!! Love my TJ! It's a GREAT car!! WC

OK, getting back 'on point' here...... here are a couple of pics of the amp as it starts to take shape. I'm posting a pic of the label from the PT I'm using. Again, this is because I had it.....not because I chose it as being the right one. So, it may be way off (though I hope not). It looks to be 'OK'...though again, I'll likely have some 'voltage' issues to deal with. Also..... Derek, if you read this, here's another thing that tends to bug a guy like me: Note the pic of the RCA jacks. The damn things don't match!! This is enough to REALLY 'tick me off'. Now I've got to make a run some place to go find a set..... which aggravates me. And, I sincerely doubt I've got any recourse on the 'un-matched' set from RatShack!! Aaahhhssshhh!! Anyway, onward!! Still have the multi-cap to mount. Ran out of screws. I counted a couple of the larger ones for the PT, OTs, and Choke.....plus 2 for the multi-cap. But, I think those are a bit large for it....so I'm going to use the smaller ones used for the tube sockets. So....back to the Hdwr Store!! Also still need to decide about the power cord....as in just a straight though cord, or one of those IPC(?) mounts....and a power switch. Then, on to wiring it up!! WC
