Sansui Speaker Upgrade Completed

Rod G-6000

Do I See Silver?!!
After a couple of weekends I finally finished the SP-2000's and the SP-1500's. All caps on the 4 were replaced with polypro caps bypassed with .22 film & foils. The ports on the SP-2000's were reduced using a carpet roll tube then wrapped once with carpet padding. Perfect fit. I replaced all of the heavy mesh grill backing with some nice breathable cloth of a burgandy color. Then I used some 3/4" wide X 3/16" thick foam weatherseal before replacing the back panels to seal them up.
I did the 1500's one at a time so I could A/B them. The first one I tried without the F & F's and there was improvement over the origional caps. I then added the F & F's to the 1 1500 and what a dramatic difference in the sound. The mids & highs lit right up. The other 1500 sounded muddy and lifeless compared to the completed one. Now that all 4 are done they sound sweet pushed by the G-6000.

They look real nice! Bet they sound sweet too. I also will attest to the "bypass effect". I built some 3-ways with 12" Daytons, Vifa mids and Morel highs. Tried them first with just Dayton metal/poly caps, then bypassed those with .01uF AudioCap Theta F&F's and, as you say, they lit right up!

Vifas and Morels are nothing to sneeze at to begin with but those little AudioCaps really made them stand out! Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't tried it myself.

Thanks Snapper and Paul. I had to make up some brackets and mount them to the back panel to hold the woofer caps for the SP-1500's.

Wow, what great timing. I could use some suggestions and guidance. I just picked up a pair of SP-2000 speakers from a guy that was moving. He brought them home from Vietnam with him and he has kept them in beautiful shape ever since. He even had the original boxes. I hooked them up and other than needing to clean the switches they appear to be in perfect shape. I was very disappointed in the sound quality though. They sure do seem to be a very well made speaker and cabinet but the sound quality just isn't there. The bass is very muddy and booms a lot, not clear at all. The mid range seems to be harsh and artificial sounding. The high end is OK but not great. It does seem that replacing the caps may be in order but the bass is a problem that I am not sure what to do about. Could you elaborate on what you did with the port? I did try to stuff it with various materials including a tightly fitting rubber ball but nothing that I did improved the booming bass.
I like the solid construction of the speakers and it seems that they should have the potential to sound really good but at this point they just don't. Suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ultrahog, do a search for Sansui SP-2000. You'll find a lot of great info from members like rec50 and archibael. As for the port redction, I used a carpet tube, the one that large industrial rolls are wrapped upon, wrapped the outside of the tube with carpet padding and secured it to the tube with a staple gun. It's a little tight to get into the origional port but thats what you want so nothing will move around.
What are you driving the speakers with?

I will do a search as you suggested. I did pull the trigger on my post too soon before posting. I just picked up the speakers two days ago so I am just starting to learn about them. I saw your post and jumped too quickly. I tried them with a Fisher KX-200 tube amp, a Dynaco SCA-35 and a Realistic STA-120B (I like it). The tuba amps did sound different and somewhat better but still surprisingly poor, considering that I was expecting to be pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the tip on the carpet tube. I have two friends that are in the carpet business so I am sure that I can get one easily. Are you now pleased with your SP-2000s, particularly the bass quality? I will hold my additional questions until after I have searched for info that is already posted but will be back if I have some that don't get answered.
Thanks again.

I can say that I like how they sound for my particular set up and room size. (16x18) I'm also using the SP-1500's and SM-82's at the same time. First thing to do is to check all of the drivers in both speakers to make sure all is working properly. Before recapping the 1500's the tweets could barely be heard but now stand out. Ask whatever you have questions about, if I can help I will. If not there are many members that will chime in with advice.

Dear all,
I need schema of Sansui SP-2000 crossover. Can you help me
Thank all.

Hi and welcome to the forum.......Nice to have you with us....

This thread is over 5 years old....Im not sure whether you will hear from these guys.......
I always check how old the threads are before I jump on them.........

You might be lucky though.....

Keep searching through the threads. There is a great thread about rebuilding the crossovers and adding bypass caps to tame that Godawful booming bass that the SP2000s are known for. I followed the information in that thread and added those bypass caps. It did make a big difference but they are still not my favorite sounding speakers by any means but the rebuild did help a lot.

Oh yeah, welcome aboard danca!
