Dq-10s' many questions

First of all I'd like to say thanks to you all in advance. I find answers to most of my questions through seach and reading past posts but I'm in need of advice /help with my newly acuired DQ-10,s $50.00 @ the last garage sale saturday almost didn't get out of the car and only had $20.00, they held them while we went for more cash. almost had a heart attack getting back. When I picked them up and carried them to the car they said:
"Glad we don't have to move those big things"
These are replacing B/A A400's run by a sx-1050. I have a room 24'x 30' and listen to cds through a H/Kfl8380 cd. I plan to add a sansui SR 838 TT soon.

I have foam on the way and would like to recap.
Need source for schmatic. Regnars kits are $160.00

Does the LP-1 cross over require 2 sources of power? Any info opinions on this unit?

Suggested amps found in search:
Denon POA- 2200
MC 2105, 2205
ARC D75, D76
Marantz 1152DC

It's been said you need 200wpc min. ?

I found limited to no info on some of the above and don't
understand most of the tech. specs. I'll rely on respected members opinions.
Before pulling the old foam out I listened to them briefly and found them a little harsh in the upper end. any power supply that might smooth this out?

Any and all suggestions ,comments welcome.

I'm sure others will stop in with great suggestions. I used an 1152dc (thanks Gord!) and was happy with the sound but felt it might've wanted more power.

The harshness, well some like the piezo tweeter and some don't. In my (at the time) hard small listening room I had... issues... and used the scientific method of attenuating it - toilet paper. I did end up pulling the piezo and dome tweets, pulling the piezo xover components, and installing a JVC membrane tweet which worked fine for me.

I had subs, not DQ subs though, and did not use the DQ xover. I will say they liked being hi-passed at 45-50hz.

A xover schematic is attached. Congats on the score, and enjoy!

Pete

Thanks for the schematic Pete thats a big help. I will order caps soon, are there other components in the xover I should consider replacing?

I'm not sure you want to re-cap that crossover yet. That's a tall order, and easy to screw up. Give them some time, and use that tweeter adjust pot, and you may not need to.
Mine react really nicely with 120 wpc of Yamaha (though I can feel that I could use more power), and my KR-9400 sounds peachy with them. The sx-d7000 sounds a bit brighter at first, but I bring the tweeter pot down to just below half, and it is really nice.

I'd play with em first before deciding whether to recap that rather complicated x-over. I also removed the piezo tweeter from my DQ-10's but that's strictly a personal choice. Regnar is slang for "How much money can we bleed from you?" and IMHO should be avoided at all costs. There is plenty of information both here and elsewhere on the net concerning the venerable DQ-10 so even though Regnar likes to pretend they've got some sort of secret decoder ring when it comes to DQ-10's, they don't.

I did the regnar recap years ago. It made a easilynoticeable improvement, and the caps supplied were of high quality, so I didn't feel like it was a rip off, but you could come up with equally good caps yourself for considerably less. One of the caps didn't get replaced -- perhaps there isn't a equal value replacement -- but it made me wonder. If its ok to have one old electrolytic, why not two? Or three? etc.

The B/A A400's are so smooth and pleasurable to my ear, everything sounds good, never harsh or bright. The DQ10's kind of shocked me with the detail, sound stage, imaging. My listening experience is Polk RTA 11 tl, KLH 20's, Minimus 7's,and the B/A's
Oh yeah cs77's wow those hurt.
Anyway that little harshness freaked me out.
Good advice I just need to let my ear and mind adjust.

There were 3 crossover versions of the DQ10. The 3rd version had poly caps in the treble, and won't benefit from recapping. If the drivers are mirror imaged, then you have V.3.
The LP1 is an electronic crossover for use with a separate woofer. You do not use it if you run the DQ10 alone.
