Peter Gabriel is hissing!

So I picked up a copy of "So" at a local music store's Saturday "warehouse sale" a while back where every LP is a dollar. It looked great, no scratches - I thought it would play perfectly. Indeed, it played without cracks or pops, but it hisses on some tracks - especially on the esses (S's) on "Sledgehammer" and "In Your Eyes." Needless to say, this is immensely annoying because of the repetitions of the hissing titles in the songs. I figured it might have been groove damage.
A few weeks ago I found another copy for cheap - and it does the exact same thing! Has anyone else had this experience with this record? None of my other records do it, so I don't think it's my TT setup.

Some lp's are just begging to get replaced by a CD version. So is one of them for me at least.

That mussssssst be sssssssssso annoying. I'm sssssssso ssssssssssorry about your hissssssssing ssssssssssssisssssssssssy.

Lots of lps pressed in the 1980's had that crappy sound. I always attributed it to poor quality pressings.

Hey - mine too. I spent about an hour f'ing with my TT to make it sound better. Really makes you think about it. Tables, that is.

Cleaning the vinyl before putting it on the table does wonders as well. Practically every record you own has that mould stuff on it (I forget what it's called).

They used such a poor grade of vinyl in the 80s, due to the idea that LPs would be passe in a few more years. Some of those '80s pressing were so flimsy they'd warp right out of the package.

My bonnie raitt luck of the draw does the EXACT same thing you are describing.....I guess in the case of newish pressings, sometimes CD's are just better

That would be mold release compound.

Whih is one of the reasons I stopped buying vinyl at the prices being charged. Now that I can get them for a $ or less I buy them but I do notice almst every one has a slight warp.

Yep, same here

I bought the LP new when it came out years ago, and then, as another copy does to this day, has a terrible hiss, on a completely different system.

Couldn't stand to listen to parts of it either. As an FYI, "Security" is one of my all-time faves.
