Electro-Voice 12TRXB vs. SP12B & T-35

I have a pair of EV 12TRXB, and I've recently happened on a pair of EV Sentry IIA that seem to have SP12b & T-35 drivers in them. I had been thinking of putting the 12TRXBs in to Aristocrat cabinets, but it would be nice to know what others thought of the SP12B & T-35 combo.

Thanks!

Not an EV expert by any means....

Well, the 12TXRB's are supposed to be an SP12 with a T35 in the center, but I believe the stand alone T35 has more output than the one in the 12TXRB.

I have an EV system that consists of an SP12 with the 8HD horn mid and a pair of monster T350's. They are in a cabinet that's a bit over 4 cubic feet and I they are awesome!!
You wouldn't believe me if I told you how great they sound!!

There is something magical about the 12TRXB! I have a set in a pair of Aristocrat enclosures. You would not be disappointed with this combo!! I also have another set of Aristocrats III's that have the SP12, T25 and T35's. All sound wonderful. If you are shopping for vintage EV drivers, be sure to get the 12TRXB's or SP12's with the orange/red cloth surrounds. The paper surrounds are prone to tearing and cracking with age.

I have a lone :tears: Aristocrat cabinet with the SP12/T35 and crossover. Fantastic sound. I cannot comment on the 12 TRXB's as I've never heard them though I do have other EV coaxials that I like very much. I would think the SP12 would give a bit better low end response than the others IMO.

Mac, with your ability knock off another cab. I'm dying to hear your thoughts on a pair.

I wish I could find a pair locally at a reasonable price. My 12TRXB's are just sitting and waiting for them.

Maybe I'll have to crack the Karlson's and mount the TRXBs in there for a while.

I've got a lonely SP12B, and I'd like to get it paired with a horn for a mono set-up. Squidward, the thread is timely for me! Good info so far, guys!

:lurk:

Do it! I have a single Pioneer (!) 12" Karlson kabinet that I threw an SP12B into just for fun, to see what would happen. It sounds pretty darn good.

I just sold a little Grommes mono that was a very good sounding amp. It was a Little Jewel LJ6 I believe. Should be a sweet mono rig when you get it done.

Mhardy, I'll slap the EV's in there this week and post some pics with listening impressions.

The SP12B/12TRXB has a longer voice coil winding (bigger X-max) than the SP12. About a 1/2" long voice coil winding in the 12TRXB, vs. about 3/8" for the SP12.

Basically, the 12TRXB will make quite a lot more low end output, before it distorts...

Gordon.

Thanks Gordon, very interesting! Why does the SP12 have such a larger structure to it? Does it have any advantages?

Also, would you expect a 12TRXB to be sonically the same as a SP12B & T-35 combo, or would it be inferior due to compromises with putting the two together for a coaxial design? Would the "point source" nature of the 12TRXB be worth any trade offs?

Thanks all that have responded, a very good thread indeed!

If you compare a 12trxb in stock and after a recap of the xover, recable, etc, you will notice even better sound...as nice as the 12trxb is stock, there is still more goodness to be gotten from them/

Some of the 12TRXBs also have the big structure. Look for pics of WhiteSE's 12TRXBs. It's just a basket option that EV used in the later model units. IMHO, those are better than the early model ("cinnamon color" basket) units...

Gordon.

The later SP12Bs (big frames) are the ones that I think are better. The older SP12's, whether they be "b" or not, have limited coil travel (X-max). For whatever reason, the cinnamon-color 12TRXB (early model) also has greater coil travel than the SP12... but not quite as much as the later big-frame models...

Gordon.
