Magnavox 1S8450 Speakers?

Has anyone ever heard of or know anything about these speakers? A google search came up 0. I bought them yesterday at a thrift store that was having a moving sale. They have a horn tweeter and looks like a 12" woofer. The model number on the back is 1S8450. They are made of what looks like some kind of partical board. They weight about 20/22lbs. They measure 24" high x 15 3/4" wide x 11 1/4" deep. They sound real good. Not alot of bass for the size of the woofer. They have a [for lack of a better word/words]clear/clean sound. It appears they were made in the USA. I have tried to upload pics. I hope they show up.

Thanks for any info.

Those are Heppner horns, and the bass drivers are probably Heppner as well. Heppner was an OEM for many more famous companies including RTR, Altec, and Cerwin-Vega. Chances are that if you've owned a vintage speaker, especially those made in the US, you've hear a Heppner driver. Put the drivers in better cabs and I bet they'd really sing.

The reason for not much bass is the open back (perforated). Perhaps if you stuff it with damping material to kill the back wave the bass may improve. As an experiment, lay a pillow or two on the back to cover the holes. If that improves the bass, stuff the cab with Dacron Poly Fiberfill.

What kind of cabs would I put the drivers in M Jarve?

The Poly Fiberfill may well help the sound. The cabs do look bare.

I wonder what the power rating is?

The woofs are going to have a fairly high Q, as they were intended for open-air applications (consoles and such). So they probably won't like being in a sealed box, but as Paul mentioned, try controlling the backwave with some polyfill.

At present I have them paired with a Pioneer SX-1500TD receiver I`m useing for TV sound. They sound real good used that way.

Covering the back does add more bass. Also sitting them closer to the wall helps.

Those horns look suspiciously similar to the ones in my grandmother's Zenith console. Though I can't figure out why one of them is dead:(

Any way to repair, or must I replace it? I'm afraid to remove the foam because of the incriminating label on it:para:
LOL :D I doubt if they are serviceable unless there are some replacement voice coil-diaphram assemblies running around someplace. As I recall, most were sourced from Jensen and CTS. Maybe Gordon or Paul will chime in and fill us in.
