KLH model 23 and 6 impedence question.

i am trying to replace a tweeter on one of my model six KLH.
i understand the model six is 8 ohms and have same tweeters as model 23, 17, and other models. nevertheless, i just learned that the model 23 speakers are 4 ohms. will it be ok to use model 23's tweeters on model 6? thanks for any input.

Yes.

The tweeter draws very little total current.

Consider whatever impedance of the woofer to be the system impedance, since 90% of the power in music goes to the woofer.

BTW, it really does not hurt a thing to have a 4 ohm woofer, a 16 ohm midrange, and an 8 ohm tweeter. Or some other combination. The crossover components for each driver are simply computed for that particular driver.

Do find out if those tweeters were made in 4 ohm and 8 ohm versions, and if so, did KLH use a 4 ohm version in the 23? I don't know.

I have a slightly different take on your question than Paul. Paul is correct in that the tweeter draws very little, so from an amp perspective you can do anything.

Your problem, however, will be in matching your "repaired" model six to the unit with the original driver. There is a good chance that the new tweeter will be quite a bit (as much as 3 db) more sensitive.

You might be better off, replacing both tweeters. Then, to get back to your original sonic balance you may have to cut back on the treble control.

Hope this helps ...

Hmm.....that's the first I've heard of the Model 23 being a 4 ohm system. Not saying it isn't, it's just news to me.

Regardless, the tweeter used in Model 23 is the same at that used in the Model 5, 6, 17, 20 (also a 4 ohm system, BTW), 23, etc., and is an 8 ohm tweeter. - Mark

KLH 23 impedance

KLH 23 is an 8 0hm system. It uses the same woofer as the KLH 5 which also is an 8 ohm system. I have 4 model 23's stacked and they are clearly marked 8 ohms..

The KLH 20 is a 4 ohm version of the 8ohm KLH 17.

Several KLH models share the same 8 ohm tweeter which was originally designed for, and used, in the KLH 6.

maybe i was confused between model 20 and 23......
so, anyway, i guess it's ok to use tweeter from 4 ohms speaker in 8 ohms speaker. thanks.

weird

huh, 8-ohm tweeter is news to me for the 23's. I replaced the tweets in mine with ones I got from ebay that were allegedly from 23's. I measured the replacement tweeters to be ~4 Ohms with a DVM.
Regardless, they sound pretty good, though I'm leaning toward EconoWaving them in the future...

whoops. Thread revival.

What you read on a DVM is DC resistance, not impedance, and it's almost always lower than the impedance, which is AC at some frequency.

Speakers, generally, are rated at or near their minimum SYSTEM impedance.

I believe they recently discovered over on CSP that even though KLH 17 (I believe it was, 'cause that's what I was researching recently over there,) system impedance differs, the tweeter is the same 8-Ohm impedance as model 20.

[Or vice-versa.... ;) ]

Many KLH tweeters can be mixed and matched with fine results, but according to KLH, there are differences in the tweeters used in their speakers. Model 5 & 6 has a 1 5/8" unit. model 12 & 20 has a 1 3/4 " unit. Model 22 & 24 & 26 has a 2" unit.

Besides the size differences, the tweeters performed differently with power handling variations. In a Henry Kloss interview in 1996, he mentions that the basic KLH tweeter was "tuned" for various speaker model applications.

man! tuned is reet. i just picked up a pair of klh model 20s for a little more than $20 for the pair. jeez, what sweet, sweet speakers. right now, i'm running them off of a yamaha model p2050 amp, which is driving the signal from my m-audio signal processor, off my mac. these speakers play sweet, sweet jazz. i played chick corea's "return to forever," and stanley clarke's acoustic bass sounds like he's playing it in the room, and those fried-egg tweets are a perfect fit for the 10" treated-fabric woofers. aeirto's percussion tinkles through bright and clean, and that rhodes just sounds majestic. i highly recommend these beautifully designed old-timey speakers.

The 5's and 23's I used to own measured 4 0hms on my meter....both very nice vintage speakers and my favorite KLH models. Hands down. (except for that electrostatic:)).
