Introducing my new Pilot 245-A...

Redboy

a few good watts
As there are good years for wine, 1958 must have been an exceptional year for audio! I've loved my Eico HF-81, and now... the Pilot 245-A!

After being resolved to the idea that my console score would float around the workroom for an indeterminate number of years, I met a guy a few weeks ago who knows his way around tubes like a dog knows his own backyard. Better yet, I had stuff he wanted!

We arranged a "work for trade" kind of deal where he would replace the big electrolytics in the amp in exchange for a few goodies from my garage. He also replaced the selenium rectifier, cleaned all pots, switches, and sockets, and tested the tubes. I supplied the parts needed, and two weeks later I've got my New Year's toy!

All coupling caps are the Orange Drops that I had previously replaced, and all 'lytics are now Sprague Atoms. I'm going to wait a while longer before passing final judgment, but this Pilot may well give my Eico a run for it's money! Initial impressions are that the sound stage is not as "big," but the bass is more noticable, somehow. I'm not sure yet if that's good or bad.

No hum at all, and on my 98db efficient Forte's, I hear absolutely no hiss from more than a foot away.

Big thanks to Tom Bavis, who hooked me up with a schematic in my hour of need...:thmbsp:

ejfud, this one's not as pretty as yours, but I think you'll want to hear it sometime...

See pics for some before and after. This thing was cruddy. Lots of nicotine and some funky corrosion on the brass faceplate. I'm still not happy with the face, but it's passable for now.

Looks great Nate! Let her run in a bit, these have the same amp section as the 232 that RC has and that's a darn good tube amp.

Now I feel bad about mine sitting in the closet with no release in site.

I have to come over for a listen to both amps soon! If my Almarro ever gets here you will have to head to my place as well.

That's almost criminal!:tears:

I foresee central air in your future...:D

This thing has a "Loudness" control, which is a new thing for me. I was feeling weird about preferring the sound at max loudness, but a review of the schematic shows that max loudness is neutral. Other settings add resistors into the circuit. Now I feel better about that.

MAX loudness baby, yeah! :guitar:

Right...

Great looking Pilot. It sure looks a lot cleaner than the last time i saw it :D

Im looking forward to hearing a comparision of the Eico and Pilot after everything settles down.

Since this thing was pulled from a console, the faceplate doesn't really "mount" onto the chassis the way I'd like it to. Right now it's simply hanging from the switch and pot shafts. Does anyone have a good way to mount the plate so it's properly situated?

Someone suggested cutting a wooden dowel to make little spacers. Glue the spacers to the chassis, then the faceplate to the spacers. I don't know...

Other ideas?
