1000X Restore

Well I finally got to a place in my 1000X restore where I can show you some pictures.

When I got it, it had weak sound out of one channel, and some very amateurish repair work on the channel rail fuse holders, and an added trim-pot resistor possibly an attempt to balance that dying channel.

When I started I thought, 'I’ll only change a few bits just to get it going', here’s what I ended up doing.

Changed rear panel fuse holders for new ones.
Removed that trimmer resistor.
DeOxit bath.
Replaced all 4 output transistors (one was s/c) for 4 x MJ15003.
Changed all electrolytic caps, and changed 2 of them for film caps.
Reset bias.
Changed one driver transistor on one channel, and three on the other channel.
Changed mains cable, the old one was cut to 18" long !
Changed stereo indicator and input selector lights for LED’s (2 blown bulbs).
Changed mains wiring to put mains fuse in the live feed not neutral.
Restrung tuner.
Cleaned inside & out, sanded wood case.

So, the only outstanding things are that scary clipping adjustment, and finishing off the wood case.

Not too exciting as its only a 1000X...

The 1000x was always one of my favorite receivers.I had large advents when I found mine and was very happy with the sound . Always had power to spare.

1000x

It's one I don't have, I have the 2000X but no 1000.
I like that whole series of receivers, they just sound good.:music:

Hello Hyperion, I am also replacing some lamps in my 1000x. I ordered some of the typical incandescent ones but I'm going to have to use a high heat epoxy or caulk to keep them in place inside the soft rubber(??) housing. Can you tell me what you used for the Stereo indicator and Function leds and how you installed them. I'd rather use leds because of heat issues. Very much appreciated. Image of lamp holder attached.

Looking good. I am impressed with the sound of the 1000x. When you say clipping adjustment are you talking about the output adjustment?

I really can't remember what I used - white LED's is all I can remember.

Yes that's right, more accurately it is the centre voltage adjustment I think.

Nice job, John! Didn't the 1000X replace the 1000A? I wouldn't mind eventually getting my hands on one (1000X). Looks so much like a 2000A .

I feel the 1000X is below the 1000A in stature, - just a feeling but I think it took later SS models before they truly supplanted the 1000A, maybe the 2000A is it, maybe even the 5000X.

The 1000X is a good performer and VERY good as a 'first try' learning receiver IMHO.

Thanks Larry ;)

Agreed. I repaired one for a friend some months ago (fixed the voltage regulation cct and pre-amp section) and was very impressed with the sound and build of the 1000X. I think it will be coming back to me for a re-cap and restoration in the coming months, when my back log is reduced. I'm looking forward to it as it's a nice receiver to work on.
