1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Today's album:

The Streets "A Grand Don't Come for Free"

Another one brand new to me; for both artist and album.
Something about British rappers (hip hop,etc not sure if its called anything else in this regard) is always interesting to me.
Like "the hooks" so far, but we'll see....
Definitely a step outside my musical "comfort zone," a trip I aint afraid to make.

Ben

Edit: Album Thoughts: This one was a pretty deep departure from my "norm." Liked the overall sound alright, but as it played through my working morning, it wasn't "doin it for me." I slowed down and listened a bit more to the lyrics (kind of more story telling-like than lyrical) and it grew a bit more on me.
Not sure I really "liked" it.
But have collected the album (pandora) for a second listen when in the right mood, couldn't fathom listening to it again at the moment.
A bit depressing and bleak in its themes and moods, these lyrics on the last song I felt summed up the album:
No one's really there fighting for you in the last garrison
No one except yourself that is
No one except you
You are the one who's got your back 'til the last deeds done

"I'm not trying to pull you
Even though I would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit, but my gosh, don't you know it?."

The Streets made waves when Skinner's second album came out. "Bedroom rap" was a term that was thrown around as it was recorded in his flat/condo.

How about Colin Scot: self titled debut LP? Perhaps the greatest guest list on any album I can think of. Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, , Robert Fripp, Brinsley Schwartz, Peter Hammill, Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, and Davey Johnston.
Obscure yes, but deserving of wider recognition? Deservedly so. 40 years on since discovering the record I still listen to it, can’t say that about that many records.

Today's album:

Paul Simon "Hearts and Bones"

Ok, admit I let out a little groan when this album popped up...
Been a long while since I have enjoyed Paul Simon and in fact have ALL my Paul Simon and S&G albums in my "open to letting go of" pile.
Certainly plenty of Paul Simon and S&G songs I can enjoy, but not a lot of interest in whole chunks at a time.

BUT... Hearts and Bones is an album I have NEVER heard... so I will play on with an open mind (and ears).

Ben

Edit: Album Thoughts:
I MADE IT THROUGH! Generally my overall take on this album; blech! While I could halfheartedly enjoy the more upbeat/up tempo songs such as the first track, the plodding of the more soulful/slower songs became a bit tedious. Couple of the songs had some definite outside influences (e.g reggae tinged etc), that made for some interesting moments. All in all however, I did not find this album engaging at all.
Thus far, the weakest album (IMO) I have encountered on this list... curious how this one made it on...

Interesting one.
Never heard anything from their solo careers, but i kinda enjoy S&G and listen to them quite a lot.

Mine for today is New York Dolls. Looking forward to that one. The early punk rock scene with Stooges etc is a nice period of time in music history.

I made it through the Paul Simon, but man not "fun."
I have no hate for Paul Simon, but I am less than enthusiastic about his music as time goes on. Was a time when I could truly enjoy Graceland, have NOT desire to hear it now.

I like the New York Dolls and The Stooges but never was "super into them." Would be worth my time to give them a new listen.
I am a long time punk fan, but like all "punk fans" developed a pretty narrow view on "what is punk," always some room for growth.

Again, thank you for this website, its been fun, a lot of fun in fact.

Glad you like it! Hopefully there will pop up some albums you really enjoy soon enough!

The Dolls made this list? If yes, which LP? It's gotta be the debut LP, i.e., New York Dolls (1973); their second, i.e., Too Much, Too Soon (1974) gets dissed all the time, has for years. Personally, I love both LPs but the best "original" numbers are on the debut LP. OTOH, the Doll's cover of "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", on TNTS, is superbly done.

Today’s album:

Yes “The Yes Album”

nothing new here, I do like this album. Quite possibly my favorite Yes album... when that guitar comes in at the end of “Starship Trooper,” man-o-man does it get me. Every time.
Admission here though I only dove into the non-radio Yes songs in the last number of years...
Thanks to Jello Biafra telling me that Yes was the worst of music.
He got that one wrong. For sure!

anyways, always a good listen; The Yes Album is hitting the spot today, a day off from work, as I prep a GIANT brisket for smokin’.

Yep, their debut. Number 300 on the 2016 list.

David Bowie “Station to Station”

I like David Bowie. That being said, I probably have only ever listed to "Ziggy Stardust" and "Let's Dance" as whole albums. Really only listening to Bowie's "hits" not so much the albums.
This ought to be interesting and a bit "deeper" than my typically Bowie listening experience.

Note: I guess this album was technically my Monday (9/7) album, as I logged on today and it was already asking me to rate this album.
Does the list just automatically move on everyday?

Ben

Edit: Album Notes:
First and foremost, let me say here and now that I respect David Bowie and have always recognized a "talent" within him... That being said, I have always felt David Bowie's music plays in a language I don't speak and/or understand... His music as a whole has never "grabbed me."
Station to Station, honestly was pretty "meh" to me, today. I liked "golden years" (of course) but also did enjoy "stay" a bit. Otherwise though, the album just plodded on for me and left me feeling ambivalent.

Interesting! I love Bowie and that album, together with Low, is probably my favourite of his. A 10/10 in my book! His Berlin-era was wonderful.

And yea, it just goes on and you will get a new album generated each night (GMT). You can just press did-not-listen and you'll be able to revisit it and rate it later on from your history tab if you want..

Good to know... wasn't sure if I pressed "did not listen" if the album would come back 'round or not.
And again... really enjoying this, thanks again.

Today’s album:

Big Star “Third / Sister Lovers”

Album Thoughts:
Was a bit excited to see this album come up as I see lots of Big Star albums (esp. #1) being shown and talked about, yet I have never listened...
Until now... and I am starting to feel a little "bad" or that I must not be doing something right... cause I did NOT enjoy this album.
Man-o-man more (IMO) overly melodramatic and slower than I expected. Just seemed (to me) to drone on and on... where I was able to enjoy some of the more "up tempo" songs such as "Till the end of the day" with its more straight-ahead garage rock sound, the majority of this album just left me feeling uninspired.
I will throw out that, perhaps, this album isn't a good "at work album" perhaps it requires a different setting...

Ben

I am enjoying the 1001 albums website so far it has generated albums i already knew. Todays album is pushing me out of my comfort zone and is going to mess up my AMHD algorithms.
