2325 ISSUE

Greetings all,

I am new to the vintage audio hobby and recently picked up a nice 2325 (Manufacture date 10/24/1974). I was having an issue where the right channel would fall off at lower volumes then come back. I took the unit back from where I purchased it for a repair. Once returned, The unit no longer drops the right channel but it now has a perpetual light static on the left at zero volume. I can only assume it remains when the volume is turned up as well. The right channel makes no such noise. Any ideas on what would cause this?
Oh, I have tried all the buttons and switches multiple times and nothing seems to affect it.

Any help is greatly apprciated.

First try using DeOxit on all the switches and controls. Let's assume it's a mechanical problem first. From there if the problem continues you can look into electronic issues.

Hi,

Welcome to AK and congratulations on your 2325. Would love to see a photo.

I have a few questions. Do you hear the static no matter what the Selector switch is set? Or just when on Phono? Does the volume control have any effect on the static or does it remain the same?

A little bit about the history of your 2325 could be useful. Do you know what work was done before you purchased it? It sounds like the seller is working with you, a good thing.

Switch contacts , cold solder connections , relay contacts just to name a few.Could also be a noisy transistor for your static issue.

Thanks for all the help guys. The static is present no matter what the selector switch is set. Pressing all of the buttons has no effect on it as well. The The Volume has little, if any, effect on it.

I know the TONE selector was cleaned by the guy I bought it from. When I returned to him for the dropping of the right channel, this is what he did "The problem is the MAIN IN / PRE OUT connections on the back, not the controls. So what I did is clean them and that seemed to cure the problem". . After the cleaning, the perpetual light static on the left at zero volume began. I guess I should have lived with the occasional channel drop....

So did you try a set of rca cables plugged directly into the pre amp out and main in jacks?
Also try those same cables but swap the preamp left out into the right amp in jack.
Does static stay in left speaker or move to the right channel speaker?

Bob

My 2325 had a similar noise that was cured by cleaning the the Pre Out/Main In jacks as the tech did. But it's possible they can't easily be cleaned enough. I like Bob's idea to use RCA jacks to eliminate the internal connectors as a possibility. If the protection relay has not been replaced, it is also a suspect.

I did what Bob suggested (RCA preamp left out into the right amp in jack) and the static moved to the right channel.

Plugging both RCA's R and L MAIN in to MAIN OUT did not change anything.

I cleaned the speaker protection relay and it had no effect .

Thanks again for the help guys,

Jon

Maybe jiggled loose or lost a ground wire while cleaning controls, etc.
Check the preamp board multi pin plug on the end of the board itself.

It may help our troubleshooting efforts if you knew exactly what your repairman did to eliminate the dropped channel issue.

If it bothers you, get a can of deoxit D5 and devote a couple hours to a good cleaning of all the switches and pots.

If you're new to something like this, spend a week or two researching the event ahead of time, look at pictures, read, read, read. There are pages upon pages of it here on AK.

If the back hookups needed cleaning, odds are it all needs cleaning and doing so could solve many issues.. Start with the volume pot, balance por and tape monitor switch and I bet it's gone. ;)

Gratitude for all of the help and guidance guys.

I am beginning to see accessing the areas/items that need to be cleaned is a bigger issue than the cleaning itself. I am not really sure how to get to the pre amp board and mini plug. Any help/photos/links here is appreciated.

As for the previous corrective action, i was told the "MAIN IN / PRE OUT connections were "cleaned" The static appeared after this cleaning was done.

bottom cover. follow the mode switch towards the rear end of the board its mounted on and you will see a black plastic plug with about 10 wires, that slides off as you pull it backwards towards the rear of the unit.

Also if you think it may be a noisy transistor in the pre amp ,you can get some freeze spray and spray each transistor and hear if the static gets worse or better. if you find a transistor that is effected by the spray. change that transistor.
