3 sets of speakers for $100- which would you pick?

Oh lord. I got carried away. This project got out of control. Its a sickness. A sickness. Ended up with a set of Dahlquist DQ-20s instead. Guess its time to sell some gear I am not using. $400 though, think I did OK. May still get the Snells just to clean them up, play with them, and pass them along.

Don't know Snells. Don't have NEW ADVENT. But do have OLD LARGE ADVENT's and Dynaco 40XL's.
From that I would say get the Dynaco's.

I can promise you if you get the Snells done up right, you will never pass them along. IMHO

I probably will get the Snells. Figure at this point its time to build a wall of sound lol. Seems like he will go $80 and let me pick through his vinyl s worth the drive.....

I'll take those trashy little KLH 32's so they aren't in your way..... You won't even notice they aren't around anymore. ;)

This transaction is starting to sound like one of those 'Too good to be true' deals, IMO... Really, $80 for Snells!? That's a smoking HOT deal .

To be honest, it sounds like the drive is the thing that's holding you back. Did you get pics of the Snells? Maybe you could post them here on AK for us to look at?

The bad tweeter in the Dynaco is probably just a crossover cap that needs changed. The original caps in that vintage Dynacos haven't held up. I put some good Daytons in my Dynacos and it made a huge difference. If you do one you should do both with matching caps.

He is incredibly hard to deal with. Its like pulling teeth to get his address, a time lined up, etc. I am sure its why he still has this stuff- the CL ad is long gone. Turns out he is an hour further away than originally though. However its conveniently near the beach and supposed to be the first nice day tomorrow. May be worth the drive anyway to the beach with a chance to score those Snells! Has a few other things too- sounds like he overspent and is letting some gear go to cover it (ha kind of like I did yesterday with the Dahlquists- I should not get on ebay while drinking wine and grooving to tunes wanting them to sound better).

So here are some pics. Veneer on the bottom of one has started to separate but he says can be glued back down. Slight discoloration on the veneers- plan a light sanding and oiling anyway. Drivers are definitely original and refoamed. He says the peeling is just cosmetic- boxes still sealed. Now he also has a Marantz 1060 he will let go for $250. May try and beat him down on that a bit just for fun, although I definitely dont need it.

Do give that Marantz 1060 a try, I have one and it's sure a sweet amp! I'd never part with it even if I acquire better and more powerful amps in future. You might need to recap it though–early 70's stuff.

@Crang

Thank you for posting the Snell pics!

I opened them up and tried to explode/zoom in to them,... I must say that I am little concerned,... hear me out for a sec,...

Now this is just my opinion at looking at those Snell pics, but to be very honest with you (and maybe some other AKers might chime in here) but they look water damaged to me. There's just something about the bottom bases that looks 'off'. The black bases, at the bottom, just don't look right,... like the particle board has been water-logged and is now swollen. The veneer looks very separated at the bottom corners too and on more than just two sides. Those speakers are kinda heavy and the bases look bowed out.

I was a big fan of you possibly getting them but I'm thinking you should probably walk away from these. That price is low and I think you're gonna run in to some cosmetic and stability issues with these. I'm hoping other AKers might provide some more advice and prove me wrong.

Now the Marantz looks great!

In the 2nd pic... the speaker on the left that is facing us (with grille cover on)... at the very bottom of the side... there looks to be a hint of a water line, the color looks gray on the veneer.

8xlaxx I agree. Just got those pics- so just asked him. Waiting on an answer. Yeah- given his proximity to the coast its could be from water.

Ya, I'm not sure what the value would be on these. If you're a DIY'er or need parts that's one thing. On the Snell forum, the speakers are calibrated and matched by an in-house tech. An additional 'tweak time' or an extra step process at Snell of approx. 20-30 minutes (Yes, Peter Snell went the extra mile here). So, I'm thinking that these speakers aren't going to sound right either given the damage. Like I said, I would walk away.

In looking at the Marantz amp,...that's a reasonable price to ask if the buyer is local, but just a 'lil on the high side for a 30wpc. Counting in the fact that you said you were 2.5 hrs away @ $60 for fuel,... I'm thinking you should probably pass on it as well. If it was sub-$200, it might be worth the drive (?).

I'm thinking this thread might get moved to Dollars and Sense.... just FYI.
