4 channel receiver club

I have a QRX-5500A (she's currently out for service), can I be in da club?:worried:

I wish this one was was mine. Mine doesn't have the green tuner dial, signal gauges and VU meters, their aqua blue instead.:tears:

Knobs and switches, look at all the knobs and switches.. I get all involved minimizing, maximizing, twisting bass and treble, flipping high and low filters, tilting an ear.. nope, little more, little less, lot more, lot less than a little more, finally got it tuned, then the song ends...

My JVC has five band EQ for the front and another five on the other side for the rear..

Knobs and switches, slidersz and mixing to perfection.. I love perfection if I can ever find it, so many songs to mix and my finger tips get sore, but somebody has to man the knobs and switches..

Ba,Ba, Bing Crosby would be proud of me..

You said it, countryslim! There's nothing like it!

I posted very early in this thread and I have since gotten a Sony SQD-2050 SQ decoder which also has a very good QS (RM) decoder. And a Panasonic SE-405 demodulator in addition to the Technics SH-400.

I also have acquired many CD-4 cartridges since then. Among them: Pickering XUV-4500Q, AT912Sa, Empire 4000 D/1, Empire 440D, and Panasonic EPC-450C II which is a strain gauge cartridge and the two demodulators I have supply the DC voltage for it to work.

I have read through this thread again and I saw where Joekid said there is nothing like quad and he is absolutely right!

When I first heard it back in the early seventies, the decoders weren't even that sophisticated and I still loved it - being surrounded by a soundfield instead of just observing it from one side!

And to walk into an audio store then with all of those beautiful receivers lit up on the shelves. Why, it was incredible!

Anyway, glad this thread stays alive.

Doug

I'm in

I had quad stuff in the 70's,a 4 channel dacorder? reel tape recorder, a marantz 4 meter amp, a pioneer 4 channel 10 "reeler, qx 747 pioneer reciever. Now I am retired and this summer I picked up A Marantz 4240 with under sq decoder, a broken qx 949, a good qx 949a , and on the hunt for a qx747. oh yeah I just found two quad records! and just for the info, I pluged my k2's to the pioneer qx 949a and that thing sounded so good I look at my cr 1020 with lighter eyes. I love my yamaha so maybe it needs a tune up. Also the 4240 Marantz got real looks pluged into some polks , people DO NOT belive the 4240 is from 1977.

I just got a Sansui QRX-5500 in mint condition with some Sansui S-55c speakers. Is it possible to increase the watts per channel in quad mode on this thing with some type of further external amplification? This may seem like a dumb question, but I have never owned a stereo of any quality.

I'll hop on the band wagon! I have a QRX7001 as well as a couple more Sansui quad receivers. Love to go to the listening room and crank it up. The daughter likes to turn it up loud enough to make her teeth chatter. I have 4 KLH612's (modded) with two Sony SAW40s sub woofers, one for the front and the other for the back. For a center channel on 5.1 surround, a JVC AX40 to drive that. I have a slew of CD-4, QS and SQ records. I also have about 100 quad 8 tapes.

What is the best type of speakers to use with a quad set-up? I was thinking since most quads are low powered by nature, An efficient 2 way speaker, like a bookshelf size JBL would sound pretty good on a quad. Maybe 4 L-100s

My Gladding

This is my Gladding Mark 200a Great receiver being used in 2 channel mode right now. 60 wpc in 2 channel. Very nice sound much like a Pioneer sx-828. Good match with my Rectilinear III and SONY tt-3000

Joining the club

H/K 800+ owned since new
H/K 75+
Marantz 4240

Not done on purpose, but it turns out that out of 4 receivers (other than home theater) I own, 3 are quad.

The 4240 was given to me by my wife's boss. Where does the 4240 fit in in Marantz's lineup?

[edit] I followed the links to the quad forum on page 2 of this thread. Looks like the 4240 is about in the lower middle of what looks like a surprisingly large quad lineup in 1974.

i am using a JVC 4VR-990 which puts out a comfortable 35wpc in quad mode (40something in 4 ohm) which more than fills my 20'x16' room. this is my first quad amp but it sounds REALLY good. all discrete components. i do have to drive it quite loud to make the most of my speakers (4 ohm 150w magnats and kef C30s) butit sounds like it has a lot of headroom even with the volume at 3 oclock and the VU meters pushing up to +3 on rhythm accents (eg bass drums and bass guitar etc...)

ive thought about running two sets of speakers through separate power amps via the pre outs. i am very impressed and i cant see myself going back to a 2channelx2 format.

there is a sansui QRX-7001 available in my area for around $150US. im probably going to get it to see how it measures up. the JVC unit is a beast!!!!! it weighs about 20kg. i have yet to feel it warm, even after some serious playing.

oh, i picked it up for 10bucks or something. in mint condition. unused for the best part of its life i gather. next step is to get it recapped. i recommend the magnats also if you can get your hands on them. german made and lots of reserve.

Kotare,nice very nice.
I just took my Sansui qrx 9001 out of service. It needs a relay and for the life of me there's none out there .The relay is a Omron MH4P 24vdc relay.I have looked at past post here but with all of the 9001 restorations someone had to replace one of these.
Take care all
Joe

I guess I'm QUAD man???

I picked up some vintage Quad stuff last week (cheap). Don't know if it was worth it YET or not. I picked up a Pioneer QX-949A receiver, 2 RTRs Sony TC-277-4 and TC-388-4, got a Pioneer reverb amp for free and some QUAD recorded RTR tapes. All look exceptionally good on the outside (almost mint).

I have aways wanted some QUAD stuff, but never got around to it. After a cursory look over these pieces. The QX-949 (in 2 channel mode) powers up and tunes (good tuning to FM), but the right channel is out...no speaker output on the right side. I have not cracked the case to do a cleaning. Both RTRs play with 4 channels...but both have mechanical issues with the play switch. I'm thinking a good cleaning will fix that problem.

Just need some good speakers. I've got some 2 channel stuff a Akai GX-77 RTR, Akai F51 cassette, Sansui Z-9000 receiver, Sharp speaker system, and Pioneer HPM-60. Gave away about 10 pieces (regret) Pioneer, TEAC, JVC back when I cleaned out my storage. Hope QUAD stuff is worth it???

Joe...where did you send your qrx-9001 for restore?? If my qx-949A is worth it and has more problems I may have to send mine out for a restore.
