Did see that. But, also noticed the AT50ANV, which might be even tastier. Just not sure about my preamp and the 0.12mV output on the AT50ANV. Probably stuck with what I have until Xmas.

This is the reason why AC synchronous motors are inherently flawed for vinyl playback. They're accurate until they're not. Probably the belt is at fault, but still . . .

Either the AC syncro spins at wall frequency, or it doesn't spin. Speed inaccuracies are found somewhere else. The motor is fine.

I understand that. As someone who repairs turntables and works like hell to get them at speed, it's still frustrates me to have to deal with those issues on AC motors.
 
As to ac motors: Hmmm, well almost.......synchronous motors can have natural speed slip, all friction drives (inc belt drives) slip to an extent, and mains frequency normally varies quite a bit in the scheme of things. So speed accuracy is by no means guaranteed, other than to be off by a variable extent, and that seems born out in practice IME.

Hysteresis AC motors will have a "natural speed slip" due to rotor sag. A PM syncro will not. It can however "hunt" if there is a lot of trash on the AC waveform. Correct, wall frequency can vary, but not by much here in the states. Belt drives must slip, or they won't funtion correctly, especially on PM syncro motors.

That's VTA, but VTA and SRA seem like similar concepts. As a Technics owner my guess is you can't adjust SRA independent of VTA, and I'm further guessing that's just fine.
 
I enjoyed reading the article linked in the OP, and IIRC the author acknowledges some of the difficulties of making comparisons but nevertheless seems to have made a good attempt at it IMO. This sort of comparative, blind testing is always really interesting I think.

Only one of the 9 samples was on a different platter, IIRC. And that's why I make the point that it's not unusual to find pitch variation between platters IME, which I think is what the author eluded to. The whole thing is applaudable, I wish we had more of it !
 
Think that is Mikey's website, so you should be able to subscribe. Sometimes he can be full of himself, but overall no one does vinyl like Michael Fremer.

I do indeed remember the chart. The Bronze should be set at 3 but I think it may be better at around 2 1/2. Funny how such slight changes can affect sound

Yes it is odd IMO. And I've never heard a good explanation why either. I think it may be because slight changes to SRA might affect stylus-groove friction, and many things follow on from that. That's the best I have.
