A great Score and Sweet revenge

Mark W.

Nut house of the Universe
OK so I see this ad on CL basically 1000+ albums for $100.00 or trade for a TT or Vintage Speakers. Cool I email the guy long story short he works swing I work days. We play phone tag and email tag for a while.

I offer the Yamaha TT300 turntable I have and mention the Sansui SP-3500's I have. He gets back to me the Sansuis would be to big for his house. How about the TT and ahalf case of Henekin Beer!

We work out that he can be home and awake Saturday morning between 7:30 and 9:00am. So I make arraingements with the wife to do her Sat morning workout a little early (anything to save gas when having to drive the F-250 pickup)

I drop the wife off (I have an hour) I drive straight to his place. Knock on the door Nice guy BIG dog nice dog LOL. And he has me back in the driveway.

He opens the garage door and I see basically a small one car garage with the floor covered in boxes of albums.

first thought that comes to my mind is "I'm going to be DEAD DEAD when the wife see's all this albums"

I flip through a couple boxes and already see albums that will quadruple my investment (I have only $20.00 in the TT and $18.00 in the beer add in about $6.00 in gas and I have invested about $44.00) The Yes albums alone will cover me.

I pull a dozen or so of the albums I know I will want to keep out and they are at the very least VG+++ condition with most approching NM.

We load the truck I manage to get back to the gym before the wife is ready to leave (DAMN GOOD IDEA SHE AIN'T GOT NO PATIENTS) On the dirve home sher asks how many packages of albums do I have enroute from ebay etc. I don't lie and tell her 3 I think she says "OK THEN THIS IS IT NO MORE ALBUMS"

OK so I have something to work around LOL.

I get the albums home I back the pickup into the carport so I can sort the boxes before I unload them or as I unload them. Luckily this was a collection and they are pretty much in catagories which helps a lot in the sorting>

I end up with 330 albums that stay in the pickup which I will take directly to the Local GW. sound tracks, weird ****, Religous and stuff I know I don't want and I don't want to take the time to look up on the net.

NOW this is where the revenge comes in. The local GW got a new manager a nice gal who decided that she should look up the value of her little selection of scratched albums on the internet and change all her prices from $1.99 to as much as $5.99. This pissed me off since they were worth no where near this but made certin that the one or two that might be worth buying at $1.99 I wouldn't pay her price for.

WELL I figured out my TAX recepit based on the least amount she sells albums for $1.99 SO I have a real nice $660.00 TAX Receipt for this years TAXes.

AND SHE CAN SIT AT HER COMPUTER FOR A COUPLE WEEKS LOOKING ALL THOSE WIERD ASSED ALBUMS UP LOL.

NOW back to the fun part My guess is that I will add around 150-200 Classic Rock albums to my root collection with another 150-200 albums that I will keep like the stereo demo albums and the cart setup albums and the tracking test albums and the comedy albums and and and some stuff the wife will like.

I also have two apple boxes (my guess is around 200-250 albums) that are albums I had no idea what they were so those will get looked into when I have time some quick internet searches and some sampling. I might add another 50+ albums to the collection.

I also have a box of Blues and Jazz albums I need to figure out since I know very little about them. I'm also hoping that a number of the unknowns will turn out to be Blues or Jazz.

I'm going to have some to sell a bunch to add to my "For Trade Box" and quite a few will end up in my "To Give To Friends Box" (these typically have less then perfect jackets but are in VG-VG+ condition for the vinyl I have a couple friends I'm going to enrich BIG time from this box)

Sadly the Beatles White album with the embosed name is a total wreck the vinyl is still good but the Jacket looks like hell and a half.

I have already managed to upgrade most of my Fleetwood Mac collection and even managed a nicer copy of a couple of Led Zep albums.

OH and I even manged to get a stack of various QUAD albums and a half dozen near mint Lazer disks for very popular movies (these I think get to go to Ebay!)

SO for a Saturday morning not a bad haul.

AND there are no Photo's if you can't imagine what a full size pickup bed full of boxes of albums looks like then you need to buy more albums.

:D

Nice haul. I am about to take a large load to the GW here in the next few weeks. I feel the need to downsize as I either can't find or can't physically get to albums I remember having. I guess there are worse problems. :D

It must be an Oregon thing. Our local GW has started pricing anything remotely popular at 1.99 to 4.99. Condition has nothing to do with it. Beatles, Beach Boys, Clapton, CCR etc. all over priced and scratched for the most part. Good thing they know nothing about Jazz or Blues. Those go for .99 all day long.

As it turns out now having looked at about 50 of the albums while there are multiples of many of the Rock albums (there was nearly a small box full of Yes albums) they seam to be in outstanding condition.

I added no less then 14 YES albums to my collection picking the very best of each and only a couple would I rate the vinyl less then VG+++

So just the new Yes albums alone cover my investment and then some. Granted it would have been VERY nice to have got a hold of the collection before the other stuff was pulled out but then I'm not complaining.

Great haul Mark. Can't beat a collection of classic rock. If you need help/advice on the jazz/blues stuff, I'd be glad to help. I use to be a jazz/blues critic for an online zine and thus have expertise with these genres. Enjoy the music.

ybaolywa LOL I've done much longer since I don't seam to care to much about how I spell thing I type pretty fast!

I've now swapped about 40 of these albums into my collection either by upgrading or adding. And I'm amazed at how good of condition it has to be the best condition collection save one I have bought..

Sadly according to the wife it will be the last collection I will ever buy :tears:

Or at least that she finds out about LOL

Damn nice find Mark! :thmbsp:

You might want to get a new stylus for the Pro-Ject in standby mode if you plan on sampling all of them :D

Only 6 years ago the GW near me was selling albums @ 5/ $1.00. What happened to all the "goodwill" ?

The "good will" has to do with what they do in your community, not what bargains you get from them. About 60% of their operating revenue comes from their retail stores. In dealing with SA and GW, it helps to keep that in perspective.

Hey Mark!! Don't forget to bring a few to sell/trade/whatever at the AK meet on the 15th of October,I'm always lookin' for "elevator-easy listening-MOR"type music...nice haul by the way  Rob

retrokeeper at this time I plan on having at least an apple box or albums to trade. Depending on how much stuff the guys riding with me want to bring I may bring up a box of unknowns before they go to the big GW.
