A ray of hope and some needed advice...

Delano Joe,

Small Advents that need foam, Aztec somethings with piezo(?) tweeters that really rocked the house when I used them and a Sansui G-3000 to power whichever pair he'd like.

Save his money for music, the system is free. I need the space.

Congrats!!!

That is a fantastic setup! I'm really happy for you. You're lucky to have a Dad who knows something about REAL stereos.

Now spread the word.

Michael, Welcome to AK and congratulations on that system! :thmbsp: You're lucky to have a Dad who exposed you to the good old days (of audio gear, at least), You'll be enjoying much better sounds in your life than most of your peer group. Nice to see you're clued in on the lingo ("BPC") already, too.

Do spread the word among your friends; let them hear your system, so there will be someone in the next generation to rescue our gear from the trash as we aging dinosaurs gradually become extinct. :D

Well done there, Dad, and Doucanoe, too! :thmbsp:

[P.S. - One small point. I don't want to be too picky or hard on a newcomer's first post, but usually when people type online in ALL CAPS, it represents SHOUTING. Please use normal letters and punctuation, as it is more polite and makes your posts easier to read, too. If you were just trying to show your enthusiasm for your new system, that's okay, but just capitalizing a few key words would be enough to communicate that. Thanks.]

In order for the boy to flex his learning muscle, he need flexabilty. I'd say get a Harmon Kardon dual power receiver. Pick your wattage. They are out there from 40 to 80 WPC pretty often. Plenty of power to blast a 10x10 room. The older H-K's have 2 Aux, and 2 tape loops, and 2 phono inputs plus FM and such. That way he can hook up his PC, his I-Pod, his .... and learn about it all. When he outgrows it, you can sell it for what he has in it?

Welcome Michael! I wish I had gotten into this earlier - you're heading down the right path early! Let us know where you want to go from here... you've got some great people and good resources in MN, as evidenced by this thread already!

Check the AK Classifieds for mid-power receivers, and don't forget the Business & Vendor ads. You might want to shoot a pm to merrylander, and ask him what's on his bench. He sometimes has smaller speakers, as well as a wide range of receivers.

As for speakers, don't turn your nose up at a pair of EPI 100s. Refoam the woofers, and replace the 10uf caps, and you are good to go.

You should be able to do very well for that budget, since you already have a cdp "laying around". (Sounds like my house!)
Second the EPI 100's!

Thanks guys. And by the way my name is mike if u guys were wondering!!

yep...i am going to start lookin for somw speakers to!!...i know i just got my new set but it is always good to keep a close eye out.

Well in true AK fashion, Doucanoe (Ron) came through in flying colors. Not only the receiver (which works beautifully Ron), but some nice Yamaha NS-244 speakers and a Luxman CD player. To top all of this off, Ron didn't want a penny. That wouldn't work for me (and wouldn't teach my son about finances being responsible with his money) so Ron and I compromised - he gave me his SoundCraftsmen equalizer and we will pay him 50.00.

Sure can't beat that - I helped Ron clean out his basement (he needs more room for those horns anyway) and we got a nice little system and an equalizer to boot!!!

Ron - I told Mike he'll have to come along next time we stop by your house so he can thank you personally. At least I got him on AK now so he can see how much fun the rest of us have!!!

BTW - Westend - nice to hear from you as well - you might have to stop out sometime you're in Delano and I'll show you the additions since you last were here.

Hey AC/DC16 - we'll have to talk about new speakers - I think those sound real nice! Maybe you help me get those Mach1's up and running and you can test drive those...

Hi Joe,
Sure, I'd like to see the new gear and how you have it all setup. I'll be up that way in a couple of weels or so I'll give you a ring.

pssst: AC/DC16- I have a paor of Yamaha NS A-1235 speakers you can have. Let me know when your Dad isn't around so we can move out some of your bedroom stuff. They're HUGE.
Just kidding :D

I put new EMIT's in a pair of Infinity Qe's and my 16 year old son has been "test driving" them for a year. :D

My daughter has been hinting around that she wants a nice stereo but I'm kind of hedging at the speaker part.

She said that she wants a pair of TL........she heard mine and she got spoiled.

I don't think I can survive building another pair! *groan* :D

I see Pioneer SX-780's around here all the time for $50 or less.Im a big EPI 100 fan,so Id think about a pair of those.Fine speakers that dont usually cost too much, and arent that big.

Hi Mike, welcome to AK :thmbsp:

Good to see you posting. I'm a little surprised by your handle after the last time you and your Dad were down I would of thought it would have been Stevie Ray fan :D

Remind me when you come down for the Midwest fest, I've got a pretty good AC/DC live dvd, we'll rock the house :guitar:

Hi Army - yea he goes back and forth, but he's been getting into the old AC/DC with Bon Scott lately. He's still a Stevie Ray fan though and I'm sure we'll get him going on Clapton, Zep, and a few others. Not sure we're going to be able to make it to the Midwest Fest :tears: Thats OK - this will give AC/DCfan some time to catch up with the rest of you!!!

Thanks for all the response guys - very good advice, but Ron won out with his advice - go cheap to start and take time to look...

DelanoJoe

I don't think any recommendations need to be made past the cost (FREE) of the Onkyo and Yamahas. That is well within the budget. Your son is not ready to be particular about the system as it is a first one for him, one which he will be proud of for years to come and fondly remember after that. With a budget of $200, a trip to a GW for a $10 CD player/changer and he has $190 left to buy other sources he would like or software to play.

Once he sees what can be had for low prices from CL or GW he can start upgrading as he sees fit and will have the $$ to do it if he starts with the Onkyo/Yamaha system.
