Acousti-Phase speakers?

Does anyone know about Acousti-Phase speakers? Are they good? Bad? White van? I found a single speaker for free at a yard sale with a foam-rotted woofer.

The woofer has a stamped frame and
7501-2333
575535
on it. The speaker has particleboard cabinets with ?vinyl veneer? maybe. There is a thin (maybe 1/2 cm) sheet of damping.

Some of these Acousti-Phase boxes are loaded with Philips components (AD0160 or AD0163 tweeter, AD5060 midrange, frequently)! If so, they can be made to sound good, most likely! Worth it for project components, if nothing else...

That woofer (with the "575" code on it) is a Heppner. Any numbers on the other drivers? Heppner doesn't suck either...

Gordon.

I believe they were low end speakers, but sold in stores, not white van speakers. The couple of pairs I've come across didn't sound good, but they may have needed recapping. They had a distinctive tweeter -- a dome with a perforated metal cover that was stepped.

That was probably the "alternate" tweeter, which was a Panasonic "clone" of the Philips AD0160 "eyeball dome" tweeter, with clear mylar dome. Sounded and measured EXACTLY like the AD0160, in every way. I've seen situations where one of each was in a pair of speakers (not Acousti-Phase, BTW), and they sounded identical in every way...

The way to tell them apart- the Philips had a thin gauze weave cover over the dome, while the Panasonic had the stepped perf-metal cover. Didn't seem to make a whit of difference in the sonics...

Regards,
Gordon.

Sounds like a good speaker to practice woofer re-foaming on! It was free and you only got one, which makes it perfect for training! After the woofer is repaired, replacing the tweeter capacitor with a quality unit (from Parts Express of course) and putting some more acoustic damping in the cabinet should be all you need!

PS - Acousti-Phase was indeed a legitimate brand. Its the fact that many white van speakers have names like "Acoustic Response" (to fool the uninformed into thinking they are real A-R speakers) that make people assume this is also a fake, white van moniker.

ACOUST-PHASE was sold in NYC at Crazy Eddie's. They were decent as a starter speaker, for those with a modicum of music tastes, but not a thick wallet. IIRC they retailed under $375/pr but were usually heavily discounted. I'd rank them under Cerwin Vegas but better than Fisher Studio Standards or any of the myriad of Japanese "Kabuki" speakers from Kenwood or Sansui. That's about the extent of my recollections.
