Acronyms

Of course, there are a lot of common ones that we all know such as AVR or LED, but does it drive anybody else nuts trying to figure out some of the acronyms that some posters use. I often paste them into Google when I can not figure it out and sometimes get results ranging from civil rights groups to swimming pool chemicals. Anyone else?

Acronym finder? That's a thing? I put my favorite unknown acronym on this site--YMMV and got the following results:
Your mileage may vary
Yam mild mosaic virus (virology)
Your method may vary
Your market may vary
You make me vomit (!)

Now when you see YMMV, know that you have options for how to interpret it...

GLWTS- I finally figured out what that meant. There are many others, I have absolutely no idea what they mean.

Technical ones I'm O.K with (LED, JFET, AVR even NASA).
It's the random acronyms that people seem to MUATGA (make up as they go along) that do my head in.
Is it just laziness or are they all just CUTS (completely unable to spell).

If it's an audio acronym ... I usually just google the acronym followed by the word audio.
For example ... YMMV audio

Otherwise ... I use the urban dictionary.

I find, at times, that posters assume everyone is intimately familiar with every vintage audio model ever made:

"I have recently detected a strange buzz when running my 845s through the MW-154, but cannot detect it when running the PB14/1864 combo. I'm thinking of switching the A-09 out for the B52s. What do y'all think?"

WTF ? :dunno:

I have worked in high technology manufacturing for most of my career, and the use of acronyms is obviously rampant. That said,I have always made the effort to either avoid them or to offer clarification for the less savvy who may have been involved in our meetings. And the chronic ''acro-babblers'' were sternly warned to knock it off;)

The AK Glossary, which is also located here in General Audio Discussion,is a great compendium of audio terminology and acronyms.
I unwittingly used a local (?) acronym in a thread in reference to ''sellers'' a while back that got a few laughs while folks were trying to figure it out.If you are interested, refer to post #124 in the Glossary. The term is ''BSA''.

It took me forever to figure that one out.

Just saw this is a post today
"If you decide to do any work on that amp, whatever you do, do not touch the bias trimmers unless it is plugged into a DBT."
Now, I know what that is, but if you Google, you get Dialectical Behavior Therapy which still may apply to some of us

Acronyms simplify things. They also become secret code words and if you don't know them you're obviously not one of the cool kids.

Adding to my (our) beef with acronyms, I hate when people post things like "my 4.3LN.Mark IV is the absolute best..." Is it so hard to add the NAME, like who made it, and what it is, an amp, or speakers, or a magic piece of wire? The fact that you know what 4.3LN.Mark IV means, and I don't know, doesn't make you smart and doesn't make me stupid. It just means you have no clue how to communicate outside your little in-crowd, or don't want to.

Posts in the Manufacturers Forums is the worst for me. I first look at NEW posts and I constantly see posts with a title of XX-YYY tracking problem or DD-R111 right channel distortion. Only when I look at which forum it is posted do I get an idea what they are posting about. IDKMIJM

I can't worry about acronyms right now. I'm too busy trying to figure out how to isolate and de-couple stuff. I fear a "spike" is involved. I'll spike the B-rail and see what happens.
