ADC PSX-A Cartridge

Beemerdoc

Grumpy Old Fart
This cartridge came on my SL 1300 Technics TT and though it seems fine, I was thinking of looking into a new stylus for it.

I have searched the net thoroughly, and can't find any info on this particular cartridge. It is from about 1978 or so, and as I remember, it was an upgrade to what came with the 1200.

Thanks in advance,
Thomas

I'm not familiar with the PSX-A but I'm familiar with the PSX-10 through -40. Is this a P-mount cartridge? Can you post a picture?

John

It looks like it could be, but is attached to a 1/2 adaptor plate.

As per Audia Technia:
An A-T Universal Mount model is a P-mount cartridge with an included half-inch adapter bracket. It is thus compatible with both P-mount and half-inch mount tone arms. The picture on their page matches what I have.

I just learned something; the cartridge will remove from the adapter, and is indeed a P-mount. The PSX-A is the stamping in the adapter, not on the cartridge itself.
The only writing on the cartridge is the ADC stamp on the upper part, and the label on the front. In tiny writing, it says "Japan" on the plug end.:

The cartridge is gold, the stylus portion is aged white in color.

With a little bit of a nudge from a friend, I figured out what a PSX-A is. It's the adapter, as in the universal Adapter supplied with the PSX cartridges.

... I have one ordered! ...
Different from yours, which I believe to be the original style without the model designation on the front, the new stylus will look like this:

Best guess is the company that made these cartridges for ADC was Azden.

I'm still not sure that this is PSX-30, as most of those that I have seen are silver in color.
SA-708 Suggested it might be a Series III, but those are also silver. Perhaps it is a Series IV, as they were gold, but had a different size stylus.
One of these days I will find the paperwork and truly ID it correctly.
For now though, it is the kick butt cartridge that I remember it was when I bought it.
Thanks again.

Thomas

Not Series III, SER-III. The Series III was a totally different cartridge. The SER-III, however, is identical to the PSX-30. The PSX-30 and 40 had gold bodies and, though otherwise identical, the PSX-10, 20 and 25 had silver bodies. My PSX-30 is silver because it started life as a PSX-10. ADC is a very confusing line of cartridges.

John is of course correct-- the PSX and SER and VPC styli all use virtually the same body (the specs are ever so slightly different = inaudible). In practical terms, whether it came colored silver or gold doesn't matter.

The PSX-20, SER II and VPC 111 may not seem to get much luv from us p-mounters, but it's very close to the 30 in sound. For anyone looking for a PSX/SER/VPC stylus, don't turn up your nose if a red one waddles up to you.

oh dammmm, i didn't notice. the first sumiko blue point is a pmount with a chintzy styrene adapter. i replaced it with the Lyle aluminum block adapter the had a set screw to hold the cart, and threaded holes for easier mount. whereas the mids were glorious on that cart, the top didn't track QUITE well enough nor the lows as controlled or subterranean as i wished. sumiko came out with the blue point #2 which was SLIGHTLY better but not enough for me to buy another.

ADC XLMs are my favorite mm carts, pritchard designed them and the sonus.

And then there's the orange RPSX-25 stylus which differs from the RPSX-30 in having a bonded tip rather than a nude one. Never having heard, or even seen one, I don't know, but I can't imagine they'd be distinguishable from the RPSX-30.
