Advent vs EPI vs AR Vs Dynaco

I have a similar combination of speakers as the original poster, plus a few others. These pairs include:

  1. Original Large Advent
  2. Dynaco A25
  3. AR4x
  4. KLH 17
  5. Genesis Model 10 (Same tweeter and woofer as many of the EPIs
  6. Epicure Model 4
  7. EPI A70 (smaller than all the others with the same Burhoe inverted dome tweeter but a 6" woofer)
  8. DIY Indignias
  9. Best Buy Insignias

A few personal and random observations:

  • On most days, I prefer the A25s but occasionally the Genesis and Epicures will turn my head.
  • The Advents are the newest addition to my collection (thanks again Fisherdude) but I had them for years all through College and thereafter. They clearly sound the largest of all but don't really have a great midrange like the A25s.
  • The Epicures are the most refined but the Genesis can be strikingly beautiful when they don't sound too forward to my ears. This seems to be a bit of the house sound for EPIs and Genesis in my opinion. Great with some material, too forward with other stuff. All the Genesis and EPIs image very well.
  • The KLH 17s remind me of the Advents a bit and are very nice.
  • The A70s can fill a medium-sized room very nicely and sound great with an old Sherwood Receiver (S-7200) set to NPR all day.
  • The AR4xs would be fine for everyday drivers but are a bit laid back for my ears. Never overly detailed. They can, as was said above, suck up some big power nicely and will never grate.
  • The Indignias are my daily drivers and never grate. They, too, can really suck up the power but really always sound relaxed and easy and image very well.

I would also put the EPI100 ahead of the A25 for its linear frequency response.
I would turn up the bass when listening to hard rock.
The Dynaco A25 I had sounded very colored and had less dispersion.
I would add the Polk Monitor 7 ahead of the A25.
