Advice for a new pair of speakers

Hey everyone, anyone know a great pair of speakers for under $400? I've been thinking about the Infinity P363's, since they had some good reviews and are fairly cheap. Smaller Klipsch bookshelf speakers were also suggested, but I think I would rather have something larger, with more of a presence. It's for average listening, on a 2 channel system. Basically open for any ideas on quality speakers that you've had good results with!

Well, I think new might be better, but I would be willing to go used. Design is a factor, and I'd assume that older speakers would be less attractive, but I'd love to be proved wrong I guess. And I'm in the Boston area (Massachusetts). I'll be going to Delaware next week also, in the Rehoboth area, so that is another option.

For under 400, large and quality used is your only real choice other than maybe a Paradigm bookshelf.

Actually old speakers often have real wood veneer which is more attractive IMO, unless you are dealing with WAF and a spouse or partner wanting tiny invisible speakers that look like space age eggs. :)

Even with all the bookshelf models, and cheaper floorstanders? Used is just more of a liability...

No, no problems with space! But I actually do not like real wood paneling.... just because it would be really out of place where they're going. Its mostly black furniture, although the bureau is wooden I guess. Still though...

Well to be blunt you aren't going to get much in a new tower for under 400, stamped steel basket woofers, and a thin resonant cabinet, shrug.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I understand, its just thats the only money I have available for this. And judging from what I see it's not exactly the most popular music around here, but I listen to pop music. I do also throw in some alt rock every once in a while too.

It's a Sony CMT-MX700Ni. It's an all in one mini system, so it doesn't dole out a super amount of power. It's up for debate, but the general consensus is that it is about 20 watts per channel with minimal distortion. Manual says 50 wpc, but that's with 10% distortion. Also rated 6 ohm. If you need any more info feel free to ask!

I still have the speakers that came with it, but some old Bose 201's are hooked up now (1996, series IV). And no, there is not a sub out.

Problem is I really like the capabilities this unit has. Other more powerful amps with internet radio and other features cost quite a bit of money (I think Pioneer makes one). Thats the reason I don't have a more traditional amp system...
