Affordable AM/FM tuner w/ HD capability???

Hi all,

I've been putting together a system over the past few months and one of the last pieces i need is a Tuner. It's mostly modern Denon stuff so i was planning on getting a Denon TU-1500rd which seem to go for $100-$150 which is ideally my budget for a tuner. (not trying to start a D&S thread so mods don't worry, just adding this number for reference)

However, of the 4 stations i regularly listen to, 3 of them have an additional HD broadcast. I've been looking but i can't seem to find a normal AM/FM tuner that also does HD for a reasonable price.

I know about the Sony XDR F1HD and it looks nice but it's pretty expensive and also doesn't have the standard "look" that say, the Denon TU-1500rd has.

Do any of you know of a Tuner that fits the bill for me? Is there no way to get an HD tuner without spending the big bucks? Any info is appreciated, thanks.

There's internet streams of most of them. And they are the same quality feeds. Most HD home tuners are expensive these days. See if maybe you can find a Sangean HD tuner.

Thanks for the info, i had read about the Sangean HD tuner before. It does fit the bill except i don't think it does AM/FM does it? I'd hate to have to buy two separate units for both types of radio.

I know i can do internet streams for most things but i don't have a set up that allows that to happen easily. If they ever want HD to catch on they need to start making some affordable units.

The Denon TU-604CI is a discontinued tuner that has plug-in cards for hd and satellite. I see it pop up sans cards on the auction site for about your price; that said, it's not an especially popular piece and IIRC opinion here about it was divided.

Thanks for the heads up on the Denon product.

After looking into it it appears that the Sangean HDT-1X fits my needs perfectly, but the Denon has the advantage of 1.) it's Denon and 2.) i can expand later on to Sirius and or XM radio

Thanks for all the replies so far, this has definitely helped narrow my search.

That's just plain wrong Kent!

Come up and we'll do a test. See if you can blind id which is FM and which is HD. :music: And then we'll see if we can find ANY net streamer that matches the quality of either. Then we'll report the results here. How's that sound....

I just did a quick look on the web and it looks like the Sangean HDT-1X is going away.

I have bought 5 Of the Best Buy Insigina HD radios and all but one have failed in a little over one year. I gave them out as gifts.

"HD" quality is not fixed, at all, so that's not a universal comparison. It can be broadcast worse than analog FM and better. (I already commented regarding your other point, which I agree with, except for "ANY" because there are a few).

evsentry3,

This is many commercial stations. Not your finely engineered ones. Which are the best in the Knoxville market. And also Mike Murrell's fine WUOT-HD1. Clear Channel is lacking, Cumulus is getting better. You're an exception, you care enough to broadcast the very best. On most affordable HD tuners, I prefer the analog on my HH Scott by comparison though. But that HH Scott is special too. EV3. you're on (P.S. you can pass the test too).
