It's so wonderful to be here in Southeast Virginia when the swamp catches on fire.:thmbsp:

I really was looking foreward to gagging on the smoke again this morning.

Anyone else feel the way I do?:scratch2:

Just grab yourself some nice single malt, pour a big ol glass and drink until your insides and the outside are in harmony

Too busy drowning in inhaled raindrops here in Hong Kong, to be gagging on anything...

Sure wish I could send you half of it, to put out those fires (If I sent it all, you'd be flooded...).

No burning peat moss here, but we've got our own special stenches. The paper plant rides in on SE winds (feet) and the refinery does it on NW winds (an indescribable, eye-watering combination of petrochemicals).
I'd rather the peat moss.

Got some Highland Park 12 year old at the house. Have to test this theory out when I get home. At work right now.:tears:

Living in Central Florida between the Green Swamp, the water shed for the Floridan aquifer, and the St. Johns River wetlands, the smell of peat bog fires is not too uncommon. They are especially prevalent during drought times like we are in now. For me, the smell is overwhelming when near but when it is distant there is a sort of nostalgic, memory inducing fragrance about it. It has the same sort of memory recalling reaction as the seasonal smell of the orange blossoms in the spring.

Ablethevoice, I think your reaction to your local odors will probably be echoed by tentose, who lives in Jacksonville. That city is surrounded by paper mills and the stench is often unbearable when the wind is coming from up around the St. Mary's River/Nassau River area.

My wife and I were looking at properties a while back. One property was particularly nice and a lot cheaper than the rest. After talking to a local neighbor we found out the property next door was a dog rescue center and around the corner and down the street was a slaughter house. I drove by the slaughter house a couple of weeks later and thought I was going to die from the stench. We were lucky because we were really looking hard at that property.
