Living in Central Florida between the Green Swamp, the water shed for the Floridan aquifer, and the St. Johns River wetlands, the smell of peat bog fires is not too uncommon. They are especially prevalent during drought times like we are in now. For me, the smell is overwhelming when near but when it is distant there is a sort of nostalgic, memory inducing fragrance about it. It has the same sort of memory recalling reaction as the seasonal smell of the orange blossoms in the spring.
Ablethevoice, I think your reaction to your local odors will probably be echoed by tentose, who lives in Jacksonville. That city is surrounded by paper mills and the stench is often unbearable when the wind is coming from up around the St. Mary's River/Nassau River area.
