Akai GX-4000D R2R - how do you change tape speed?

The timing of this thread is a bit uncanny, as I knew nothing about unit beforehand and would have likely been here asking the same Q's as ta131js. I may try and post a picture of the unit later this evening.

I will be looking for it basicblues. Glad to know that my post was helpful to you. :thmbsp:

Now I'm getting nervous.
It has been almost 24 hours since I emailed the seller, and he has not responded.
He already has given me a positive feedback.
I'm going to have to ask for a partial refund and contact PayPal - but what choices do I have?
Well, maybe he is looking for the sleeve at this moment at the 'estate sale' site or wherever the deck came from... :smoke:

Maybe the seller had no idea it was missing . Did you ask before bidding if it was complete?

Yeah, he probably did not know about the sleeve.
He probably played a tape at 3.75 and assumed it'll run 7.5 as is.
Do you know of any other R2R that changes its speed this way?

No, I bought it with BIN just hours after it was listed.
From its description and the fact that he was selling other vintage gear, I did not bother to ask if anything was missing.
His 'guarantee' & 100% 3300+ feedback was the clincher for me. I assumed the deck is 'complete' and it would operate at two speeds as is.

Here is the listing - in case if you missed it from my earlier post.

Yes! I got a partial refund from the seller this morning. :)
Filing a dispute claim with PayPal did the trick.

Thanks to all for your input. :thmbsp:

That's Great! :thmbsp: Now you can focus on the parts you need and start enjoying that tape deck.

I gave up printing after one page.
The font is too small and fuzzy for my 63 year old eyes.
But it was clear enough for me to figure out how this deck changes its speed.
Thanks for your input oldgringo. :thmbsp:

I just noticed that my pinch roller is the opposite of the one pictured. Mine is shiny on the outer edges, and a flatter black color where the tape travels.
:scratch2:

Congratulations to the nice Akai, very nice condition

Thanks Vintage.
I always liked its looks - especially those two vertical handles.
I like the feel and their heftiness.
And the sound they make - klunk! ... :)

This is my 4th R2R.
Caught the bug last year - and still going strong.. :D

I have my Akai GX-4000D cleaned up and working great. The pinch roller on mine didn't have a shiney black surface at all. If anything it was more a brownish color. I cleaned it and now the entire surface is flat black. I also cleaned and polished the speed spindle that also had enough build up on it that the speed sleeve would not easily slide on.

I played both sides of 6 or 7 reels over the weekend and found this unit easy to operate. I had tapes with both speeds so I took the speed spindle on/off a few time and can certainly see how easy it would be to misplace when not in use.

I have 2 other R2R's and being somewhat spoiled by auto-reverse, my intentions were to re-sell the Akai unit but now I've used it, watch it & listened to it, I've just about decided to hang on to it. I really like the overall size of the unit, it's small in comparison, stand it up or lay it down. Big, easy to use, easy to see controls all add it's uniqueness.

I also appreciate the styling. It just looks more "modern" than my other vintage decks. I have a Sony TC 640 that just seems to look out of place because it appears "old". For the money, these seem to fly under the radar.
