Altec 602D Duplex or ?

Can any knowledgeable Altec officionado confirm if these are 602D Duplex or ?
Father in Law passed away 3 1/2 years ago, just liquidated hi Bozak B-305 Moorish and all his MAC gear. I've known that these must be some Altec collectible, trying to identify before trying to tear cabinetry apart. There is a potentiometer on the back.

And what the heck, might as well ask if anyone can identify the strange bird?

Thanks to anyone that can assist!

Some sort of 602. It should be rotated 90 degrees in its mount, though.
The one in this catalog scan (middle speaker in the top row) from www.lansingheritage.org is a 602A...
info on these drivers at: http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/altec/catalogs/1954-home/Page10.jpg

The HF driver diaphragms in these are pretty fragile...

602s of some variety or another. They're a bit odd in that most reports indicate that the big 15" cone has trouble reaching the 3000kHz crossover point. I'd grab any that I ever ran across, even if I'd be tempted to pull the 3000 series tweeters and use them separately from the woofers.

The diaphragm in the 3000 isn't that delicate (I have a 601A that served nightclub duty in a homemade PA cabinet for many years and survived, though it's twin was blown). Repairs are fairly expensive as only one shop has the expertise and parts to work on them.

I'd put a small mirror in the bass port and look at the backs, I'd be very careful with those tweeters, very expensive to repair and probably takes years to do, they use a microphone diaphragm.

I sold mine a while back;

It'd be interesting to implement 602 in a 3 way system, maybe with an 811 used as a mid horn from 800 to 8k or thereabouts(symbiotik drivers would work well for this app), and the tweeter used in the actual tweeter range from 8k up would see a lot less power and excursion.

+1 on this idea. You could even probably go up to 12KHz or so on the 811. That'd take the load off the 3000, for sure. And the 3000 gets right up to around 20KHz, too, with good output.

Gordon.

altec 602d woofer is wierd.. own my experience

Hi, everyone. I thought it was successful! But what is this?...
woofer itself is not moved at all like fixed.. and base is not sounded, only mid sound is working... At first this 602d was gone coil maybe so I tried repairing it myself but failed. I don't know what happend. maybe seems it was dc current from amp broke the woofer's coil...
At this morning I 'v tried to contact the both terminal by speaker wire from sounding amp. By the way suddenly the woofer was sounded for a second!
After testing I connected the woofer's one terminal with the frame directly removing plastic washer. Then woofer is sounding, But base woofer cone is not moving and sound . Only mid range sounded well. I think something wrong happend inside woofer. coil bobin is broken? I dont know what its inside system mid and base coil whether is one or two at all. Could anybody let me know about why the mid sound is working when the one terminal conneted on with the frame directly. If woofers coil is broken, how can it be sounded anyway ? What a wierd! I hope to learn from someone's helpful comment . P.S. - One thing, I opend woofer's back cap and screwed out the center bolt on the magnet. And I knoked the magnet by hammer ..is this problem?
Thanks. Josh.
