Altec 887A Capri- What's the poop?

I picked up a pair of Altec 887A Capri speakers today for about $50.00. Just as fine sounding a bookshelf speaker you could ask for. Awesome bass when paired up with my h/k 730.

I looked up the Orion BB stuff, but of course that does not tell you much. Are these considered respectible speakers? If not they should be.

Only problem I have is that the grille rattles when I pump them a 20Hz test tone, so I think I'll have to keep them removed...

i just picked some of these up for 20 bucks, drivers look great, will post pics!:banana: Have yet to hook them up.... anyone got some info?:banana:
 
If the grill only rattles when you play 20 hz test tones loudly, the solution is to stop playing test tones and listen to music. If it still rattles, then maybe you need to do something.

I had a pair of those when I was a teenager. Had them in a system with a Pioneer PL12 turntable and a Marantz 2220B receiver. I would like to put that system together again. I keep just missing the 2220B's and the Capri's which are both pretty hard to find. I think they retailed for either $89 each or a pair...don't remember exactly. They replaced a pair of BIC Venturi Formula 2's back then.

Close relative of the 886A which now house a round waveguide where the PR was housed. Nicer cabinets then the 886A, however. Bass is ok, definitely worthy of upgrades to the high frequency portion of the speaker.

ok, So i a/b'd the capris with my modded M7's and I must say that when comparing the two i say the M7's highs are too bright! The capris have Adequate bass for a sealed cab (very fast response!) The highs on the capris are easy on the ears, I feel like nothing is lost In the audible range. The separation is great.

Listening more (Kraftwerk neon lights) I felt that these would make excellent studio monitors... so i searched and found this studio that lists them as "monitors"

I was going to buy NS-10's but may just as well use these.
I agree with the first opinion.... just about everything you could ask for in a sealed cab bookshelf.... WELL worth the money i spent on them.

Do you still have you capris? haha It's been years..... these must be pretty rare speaks

how is the 886a a "close relative"? doesn't seem to look the same at all!:no: but they do look pretty bad ass!:yes:

Same woofer, same tweeter, just adds a PR isntead of being an acoustic suspension cabinet.

Consider it a ported version of what you have.

Mine look a little different now...
