Awesome pair of 16 ohm woofers for a petite onken build project.

Sell the horn and driver to offset the cost, or buy another one to complete a pair
 
I agree about the condition.

The reality is that Altec built hundreds of them, and they are a cosmetic albatross for home use. They're not historically significant.

An informed and skilled DIYer is very likely to build speaker systems from the parts that are just as worthy of preservation if not more so.

If Altec had built the 9844 using an 802 driver and a better engineered and EQ'd crossover, it would be far more worthy of preservation and adaptation to home use.

Don't get me wrong, they have some redeeming qualities and do some things very well.

I've tried using them un-modified in every way imaginable, even sideways stacked pairs for mains. They're not a speaker i would want to live with in their stock form. Add a tweeter, and distributed subwoofer system capable of tracking their dynamics and one could have a pretty substantial system, if your space allows.
 
^ Appreciate the well-considered reply. I can admittedly be a bit nostalgic about this stuff. If I were to acquire that cab I would do precisely what you suggested Altec should have done; 802 with the Zobel network crossover. And then I'd reproduce the cabinet (and need parts to build a match- D'oh! ) : )
 
I think I read that these were used in electric lady land studio for some of the Hendrix albums. I have a pair of the 9844b's. Plan on biamping them with a electronic crossover.
