Altec Snag, Please Help I.D. Cabinet

Answered a C/L add for an amplifier, add said the speaker came with. The seller said he got from aunt's estate, had no idea what the speaker was. Well when I went to check it out, noticed the x-over told him it was a Altec but he stood firm on his already ridiculasly low price.
Anyhow, wondering if anyone in AK land can i.d. cabinet ? Wondering if it is a Altec design, to me it looks a lot like a JBL but I am first to admit lack of knowledge here..

The cabinet sounds like a knockoff of a JBL C40, shrunken a bit and clearanced for the 604's horn driver.

I was thinking "knockoff" because I didn't see the removable section of the scoop - then it appears in the picture with the baffle standing up on edge. Definitely a C40 or homebuilt clone. I'd love to see some performance reports on that combination...

I'll dig up some nude pictures of my inards. Like Sam said the scoop looks different. It looks like the x-over opening would have a JBL 1200 or? in it normally, but looks like a larger cut-out. Give me a few and I'll dig up the pix, Bob

thanks for the responce. Now I am really confused, it looks so much like the C40 except there are subtile differences. The main difference I can see is only 1/2 of the back comes off, it is good for access but yours and per the Lansing attachment show a (1) piece back. I am thinking Sam may be right about it being a knock-off. I thought it may be a JBL build especially after looking at bottom where there are 4 holes and blind nuts which I assume would be for the legs. Never the less it is a solid cab and who ever built it did a real nice job.
Unfortunately this cab design will probably will not be final solution. I did purchase with the intention of keeping the 604C and eventually finding a match. This set will make a excellent addition to my stable when I finally get it together. :yes:
 
JBL's plans were available for purchase in those days, so they could easily be a well-built homebrew. It's also possible that it's a factory JBL cab with a slightly different scoop than the one in Cactus Bob's post.

yes, but the 1 piece versus 2 piece back seems like the biggest difference.

I guess it really does not matter because whatever I end up with will be exact matches. I was looking into doing a model 19 build untill a few other boxes came a long. I am guessing that project is gonna be reserected in a slightly different configuration. I have a pair of 515's and a pair of 416's, no shortage of canidates to play with for a altec project. back to the drawing board...
 
BTW

I did have this hooked up to the sherwood s1000 it came with last night. It sounded decent but nothing to write home about. it was raining pretty good so i could only listen being right on top of it. the gf said in the house it was loud as hell so the jury is still out.

I will run it again later tonight, i will need to restart the amp on a variac
 
ok,
very easy to see where the following comes from with this driver.. i hooked it up to my trusty sansui 1000a today and what can i say but wow !!! very effecient, awesome bass responce and very detail high end. in the present cab it seems to sound best about 20 feet away, i have it setup in garage and sounds just as good at the end of the driveway as the 20 foot mark..
pretty sure this driver will have a mate in the matter of a few months. also pretty sure new cabs will either be purchased or made. sounds good as is but i need something a little more near field... very happy with this aquisition...
