Am I Getting a Good Deal?

Hi, someone in my area has a Craigslist listing for the following items, together, for $75:

Speakers: SB-2565
Turntable: SL-DD24
Tuner: ST-S77
AMP: SU-V97
Equalizer: SH-8033

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is a good price for what's listed, and/or thoughts on the quality. From what I understand this is all lower end gear, but this is also my first set-up.

I wouldn't say its a screaming deal, but it sounds like a fair price so long as everything works properly. As a first setup it should serve you nicely. Just bear in mind that this was a lower end "rack-system" from the mid-eighties when Technics (among others) was starting to decline as a brand. I believe the V97 used their "new class A" architecture so it should sound pretty good; I had a V98 briefly that did.
 
The speakers are the weak link here (as they are in most rack systems). If you can buy it without the speakers (and then buy your own separately) so much the better. But the turntable's not bad, as mass market tables go. Check the stylus for wear; replacements may or may not still be available.

If you're not planning on listening to vinyl then you might just be better off purchasing a decent receiver; you should be able to find one for that price or less. Used equalizers are very cheap and it's easier to do more harm than good to the sound unless you're careful.
 
The deal sounds fine and ok for a starter system. No speakers might save you maybe $10? You won't find much for that.

Buy it and upgrade later as you see fit.
 
So, I ended up purchasing it and I'm having issues. Somehow between moving it from his garage and setting it up in mine the connection to the right speaker underwent some sort of damage. Whichever speaker is connected to the right speaker connection outputs white noise. The speaker connected to the left speaker connection works fine (although I've noticed that one of the speakers seems to get the full EQ range while the other basically only gets treble and upper mids). Also the left speaker connection makes a quiet ambient humming noise, and distorts heavily when the volume exceeds about 7, although those might be normal. I hope I explained all that in a way that's coherent. Anyways, I have the option of returning the equipment and getting my money back, but if anyone knows what the issue is and if it's something I can reasonably fix on my own I would prefer to do that.

Also I'm not sure if this is something that belongs in here or something that deserves it's own thread.
 
Sounds like dirty controls. There's a product called 'Deoxit' that's designed to clean audio controls (volume, balance, sliders, etc). I'm assuming you don't have it. First, take the equalizer out of the circuit (press the 'defeat' button if it has one, otherwise make sure the tape monitor on the amp isn't pressed). Then try rotating each knob several times back and forth (turn the system off and do the volume control first) and see if it makes a difference.

Note that the buttons and switches get dirty as well, you'll have to cycle each one of those too.
